i'm in the market for a set of good speakers for my dorm room. would like to spend under 100 dollars and it has to be at least 4 channels since i will be watching dvds and playing video games. Which set of speakres would be nice? i know only about logitech z540 and z640, and the altec 251 5.1 set. Are there any other speaker sets i shoudl consider?

Are you going to have enough room in your dorm to position your speakers properly? You might want to consider getting a 2.1 setup instead.

the Z640s will cost ~$60 I think. Pretty good for the price.

maybe eat peanutbutter sandwiches for a couple of days then wait for the dell sale of Z560 for around $130

hey im a college student and i know i'd get one of these big bang bang things and turn it up in the dorm just to annoy my hallmates

you might also consider getting the ATP3, i got it on sale pretty much for only tax months ago. they are pretty nice too

Cheap and cheerful 5.1 setup I would say is the Creative Inspire 5.1 5300..

Volume is good enough.. and the sub is wooden.. so a good bass and no port noise either, unless you really stress it out.. Would fill the dorm with noise pretty easily I would imagine..

thing is, my roommate had the 560's last year and now has the 680's. i didn't really like the super boom boom effect the bass has so i'm not really looking into getting the 560's. if the lower end of those setups have more clarity during a movie, i'd be more open to then. also who makes the atp3? and does anyone kno wut the differnece is between the creative 5200 and 5300 setups?

For under 100 bucks and if you want clarity over boomy base I'd definitly suggest the Altec Lansing 251 5.1 set, they have decent base, but the mid range and highs are somewhat better than even the Logitech Z-680's at least in my experience. (tested in the same room on the same PC using an Audigy 1 and analoug outs)

Also as an FYI Altec also makes the ATP3's and they are a pretty good set of speakers aswell

Another vote for the Z-640's. I really would STRONGLY suggest staying away from creative's lower end of inspire speakers and either go with logitech or Altec lansing's lower end speakers. At one point you could get klipsch 4.1 promedia refurb speakers for like 140-150 (a few months ago).

Gonna have to agree here....Creative has very good speaker setups for excellent $$$. I have a set and haven't had a problem with them yet.....and I like it loud.

I've heard either the creative 5200 or 5300 in one of my suitmate's room and i'm not that impressed with it. For some reason, whenever he turned the volume very high onto it, the sound comes out distorted. Was that just oen instance and i shoudl disregard that or woudl that happen to all of their speakers?

what do you want for under a hundered buck and 6 speakers? All speakers will distort if the amp doesn't have enough power to supply them.......thats why speakers distort. Get a large amplified system if you want your music "VERY" loud without distortion.

Altec Lansing makes a good 4.1 set of speakers, the ATP4. I have them and they sound really good. Hard to find though. Check ebay. You could definately get a set for less than $100.00

You can get the discontinued Klipsch Promedia 4.1s for around 100. I paid 110 for mine new in box. They are considered ok compared to most computer speakers, fw and hotdeals have listed deals with comparable speakers that are only about 40 for 2.1s. You can get 2 sets and have a 4.2 that may sound better than the Klipschs.
