Well, Unlike NSF4 the TRAITOR(😉)... I have a Xitel Storm Platinum and it kicks booty including the LIVEs! Muahahaha.... 😱
I have a feeling this sound card will Last for years, and years, and years....
Well, my Xitel storm platinum was fine on my BH6. I had it for over a year and loved it. When I switched to my current KX133 platform, it started choking and locking up on me in Win2k AND Win98.
I used to use a Vortex1, but it gives strange problems in VIA motherboards with my GeForce (the sound and video happens in slow motion).
I'm currently using a Diamond Sonic Impact 100. It's based on an ESS Allegro chip and sounds quite nice.
One word of warning though - the Diamond drivers suck (suprise, suprise) - the output sounds "fuzzy" when playing back wav's/windows sounds.
I solved that problem by downloading reference drivers (read below) and using them - it sounds great only thing is midi is marginally weaker than Vortex1.
Using the reference drivers "as is" gave rise to some strange behaviour - the sound card would mute itself in gameplay after a few minutes. (go back to desktop and you could see speaker muted - unmute it and you could keep going). I solved that problem by:
renaming the .sys & .com dos audio files of the reference drivers to what Diamond call them.
Keeping the .inf and .cat files from the Diamond drivers and replacing all other files with the reference equivelants.
It's a good card. I'm impressed with the price for such a full featured package, and it sounds good. For DVDs, Games, MP3s, you name it. I don't have 4 point speakers myself, but I have heard a live on 4point and would strongly recommend it if you are considering a new sound card.
As for sound quality well if you mean basic 2D sound, any new PCI soundcard will be good, but an SBLive! is more fun because you can add EAX effects to your mp3s and stuff like that 😀
I rather like EAX for 3D games as well, I think it adds a really good feel to a game. A3D is alot better for positioning and will give you some help if you are trying to locate sounds, but I think EAX adds more atmosphere to a game.
I love it. Maybe I have good luck buy my positional audio works pretty darn good. I can usually pinpoint locations off screen just by following my ears when I'm playing games that support it. I have the card running through a 100W bookshelf Sony stereo so it kicks much butt when it comes to music or games. I do want to hear the Klipsch ProMedia speakers some day though. This stereo system takes up way too much desktop space. Maybe those darn speakers will debut in a retail store nearby someday...we'll see.
Never heard A3D or any Aureal soundcard so I can't really say anything without sounding like a moron.
I like my card tho. Seems like it is gonna be here to stay.
Using Diamond MX300(Vortex 2) with Aureal reference drivers, connected to Technics SU-9011 Pre-Amp and Technics SE-9021 Power Amp, along with Sherwood 6.5" bookshelf speakers. Its loud, and fills the room, and doesn't sound bad. I'm happy
SB Live! 1024 Player OEM with Cambridge DTT2500 5.1 Speakers 🙂 Kicks very nice butt, but I can't compare it to other cards as this is the only real sound card I've had
I'm using the MX300 connected to my stereo, a Technics SA-Ex900 (I believe it's around 250watts) with Cerwin-Vega VS-120 speakers (3 way with 12" woofers). It really rocks with mp3's and gaming. I can't compare it to other soundcards because I haven't heard any connected to my stereo.
