Which should be my next card for 1080p gaming at min 60 fps?

For $127 less the GTX 970 gets my vote, for the same price it would be R9 390

Those will be decent stop gaps until 14/16nm cards. Look for used R9 290, 290x and GTX 780ti too.

So you can get $180 for your old HD 7970.

$127 is the price difference between GTX 970 and the more expensive R9 390.

One more information is needed for a better answer: what are the card prices (GTX 970 and R9 390)?
 
GTX 770 is for about $380 for 2GB.
And for 390, currently only ASUS ones are available and none other.

What I am also considering right now as also suggested by so many other members that I should retain 7970HD for another year and directly updrage to Next gen and juice out whats more there in it.
As I am getting $180 cash for it now I will at least get 100$ next year too and that's just $80 for an year, not bad imho and it is working well for 1080p.

At most I should get another r9 200/ 7970 HD and crossfire them or better OC this one a little bit as I have VX600 PSU only and crossfire may not go well with it.
 
If you will no longer be able to sell your HD 7970 a year from now for more than $40, then I'll say make the upgrade now, when you can sell it for $180.

If $400 is the price for GTX 970 (still not clear about that) and $530 is the price for R9 390, then GTX 970 is the clear choice.
 
Most of the online websites here and distributors are asking for about 390-400$ for 970.
One important factor which I want to consider is that if I get a stop gap card now and later would like to upgrade to a next gen then would it be supported on my MoBo? Will the new cards be backward compatible on PCI?
If not then why not I get a 980ti straightway and hold it for about 4 Years then complete PC upgrade!
 
In post #29 you said that GTX 770 is $400 and you did not correct that, even if I asked about it twice.

Next generation of graphics cards will still be PCI-E, so you will be able to use those cards on your motherboard.

There is no point in buying the most expensive card, just because you think it will be future-proof. It won't remain the top card for years to come. It is better to buy a card that meets your current needs and regularly upgrade your card when it starts to not be able to keep a reasonable framerate in new games, at desired settings.
 
It does costs $400 for 770 as distributors here don't reduce the prices quickly. To surprise you even more, the 780ti still costs about 700$ here.
I am getting about 35-60 fps in GTA V with settings almost very high with MSAA off and some other demanding options off with 7970HD.
I tried to OC it from 1000 MHz core clock to 1100 MHz in steps of 25 with memory clock from 1400 MHz to 1500 MHz and got artifacts or random colors in game pretty quickly.
 
Had a 290. gave up on me recently.
6850 sits in my computer atm and will upgrade to 390 end of month.
then I await next years die shrink and get the best deal for me with those cards.
 
Up to post #29 GTX 770 was never an option. You asked about GTX 970 and R9 390 in previous posts. This is the reason that it looked like a typo when, out of the blue, you mentioned GTX 770 price.

In any case, do not even consider a GTX 770, taking into account it's price and what card you currently have.

By keeping your HD 7970 card for another year, you will lose $140 from it's resale value.

Getting a GTX 970 for $400 now would mean that if you can sell it in a year for $260 then you would have used it "for free" instead of your HD 7970 (same $140 price loss). Even a smaller than $260 resale price (bigger loss) would be compensated by the fact that you used the GTX 970 and enjoyed it's better performance for a year.

And if the new generation is delayed or disappointing, you can still keep your GTX 970 after one year.

Why do you think the 7970 is going to only be worth $40 next year? I mean, I hope so. That would be fun project to 3 or 4 way CF for under $200. IMO the 7970 will still bring 100 USD here in the states. I sold my 5770 that was like 6 years old for $75 on craigslist not long ago.
 
Prices are changing very fast and technologies too with it. I am definately sure that after an year and a half it would most definately be under $60.
Plus I risk burning it by OC it to juice out the performance.
I am right now so much confused what i should do - use under performing 7970 HD for another year and a half or should I get a stop gap card and enjoy its performance and then upgrade to a next gen!!

Got a call from distributer of ASUS today morning and he told me that he can provide me ASUS DC3 390X 8GB for 480 USD.
I think I should get this one for a stop gap card for around two years and would buy next gen when their prices will drop down!!
 
Are you sure that by using a CX600 600W PSU with my configuration mentioned in OP and with ATI DC3 R9 390X I won't risk any component?
