I am switching back to pc gaming from my xbox 360! Mainly b/c I am tired of random freezes and have got the three rings of death before.

Anyways, I assume that the pc version can offer better graphics then the xbox 360 version. I don't have an 8800gt yet to max the settings out, but was wondering:

What settings on the pc would equal the quality I have with the xbox 360 @ 720P?

based on anandtech's CrossfireX review - a 3870X2 will run COD4 @ 2560x1600 4xAA 16xAF @ ~50fps, so you have plenty of play between dropping the resolution and AA/AF.

edit: a single 3870 does 25fps at the same settings in COD4 according to Anandtech. At 720p you'll be plenty fine. Hell, you'd probably be fine at 1080p

Call of Duty 4 on the Xbox 360 and PS3 runs at 1024x600 pixels. Your not running at 720p or 1080p or whatever MS/Sony want you to think this week. Which explains why it looks like total junk on any console. Almost any decent PC configuration would look better.

Sorry to hijack, but you got your answer already....

The consoles look fine at the 1024 x 600 resolution they run on the 1080p sets just fine (no smearing)... so why can't the PCs look good running 1024 x 600 res on a 1080p monitor?

You sit farther away from the monitor when playing a console game usually, which makes them look better than they would if you were right in front of the screen.

But why would you, when you could just render at 720p or 1080p?

For the performance gain.

If we could game at such a low res and upscale to 1080p... then we have the best of both worlds.
