Which scsi cdrom? (or convince me on getting a IDE)

ok, I'm looking for a reliable and quiet(if possible) scsi cdrom.
I read from several post that Plextor and Toshiba are the best.
Any other recommendations?
(I had experience on the Kenwood, so give me something else than that)

Also, if it turns out that I get the plextor,
should I get the ultra scsi or the wide ultra scsi?
From the review at storagereview.com, it seems that
the ultra scsi performs better.
Could someone backup about this?

One more thing.
I know the advantage of SCSI over IDE on harddrives but does it apply to cdroms also?
If not, could someone give me reasons of getting a IDE cdrom?(except the price)

Thanks for any info.

I won't convince you to get IDE. SCSI is WAY better. SCSI is not worth it's money anymore when it comes to harddisks, but whith CD-ROMs(writers)it's a different story alltogether.
My experience is that SCSI CD-rom's and more specifically the plextors read everything you throw at them. They don't break down, and the only reason you'll ever take them out of your case is several years later when it's time for an upgrade.
Also the CPU usage is much lower which translates into faster DAE, and no need for stuff like burnproof when it comes to writing. (allthough the lastest plextor scsi drive is also equiped with it)

Conclusion? Get a plextor! They may cost somewhat more, but they're woth every cent.

From what I have heard over the years, Plextor is the best SCSI around, for IDE, I like TEAC

Depending upon what other SCSI devices you have, or might get in the future, get the best SCSI adapter you can afford. A standard SCSI-2 card will cost you only £30 or thereabouts, which will serve the Plextor and any SCSI CD-RW drives you might get in the future perfectly adequately. If you need the high performance, and are going to get a SCSI HD, then get UW SCSI.

Teatowel,

Is your Plextor a Ultra wide or is it a Ultra version?

I have the Adaptec 29160 Controller so, connection wize, I have no problem.

doesn't matter..all internal SCSI CD drives have the standard 50 pin internal connector. The maximum transfer rate of a 40x CDROM is 6MB anyway, so it doesn't matter what SCSI card you have (as long as it is at least SCSI-2, which yours is).

Not true. The plextor UW version is the only cd-rom so far to have a 68pin UW connector. But there are no advantages there. It is not faster than the SCSI-2 unit (in fact it's even a little bit slower and had some issues when it came to DAE, allthough this may be fixed by now with a bios update)
Also, I've talked with one of the plextor people, and he told me that the UW version will be discontinued due to lack of success. So I certainly wouldn't buy one anymore.

Also, but this has nothing to do with your question, the 40xMax will be the LAST cd-rom released by plextor, since they've reached the technological limit (so they say). Their next product is due for Q1-Q2 of next year and will be the long awaited PlexDVD.

Bye!

I have Plextor drives in all my boxes. They are key for accurate DAE. Another vote for the fine folks at Plextor.

Sorry about the mis-info above.. I thought that all Plextors had the standard 50 pin internal connector.

Here's another vote for Plextor. I have two of their drives, a 40X CDROM and 8x2x20 CDRW.

Plextor is a POS. Takes forever to spin-up and once it's spinning it's loud as hell. Turn-on the flame thrower peeps. I usually just use my Pioneer 303 DVDROM. Only thing I ever use my UltraPlex40 is when I'm using CD-CLONE.

It's Clone CD :)

I love my 40x plex, and it does take everything I throw at it.
the 50pins were indeed faster than the 68pin by a bit.
Muhahah :)

Can't go wrong with plextor :)

I'd go w/the Plextor 40x MAX cdrom drive. In fact I just ordered one earlier today to go w/my Plextor 12/10/32S drive.

<< Plextor is a POS. >>

I'm sorry that you feel that way. My Plextor UltraPlex 40Max SCSI-2 spins up very fast and isn't near as loud as my old NEC 40x IDE was. The DAE is great, too. I almost bought a Pioneer slot-loading DVD, but I figured the only thing I'd use it for is DVD movies; my set-top Toshiba and PS2 are perfectly capable of doing that.

I'm very disappointed with my Plextor UltraPlex 40x Max. This is the second one that fails to read CDRs and makes lots of noise while reading the CD. Sometimes I even get a blue screen when it fails to read. Always takes about 20 seconds to find the CD and finally will show the cd contents on you windows explorer. If you contact tech support you will notice that they even don't take calls any more because they are too busy exchanging their drives. Are you guys sure that you are not Plextor employees or Plextor paid users to post good things about this horrible drive?

What is the version that you guys have that works fine?
What firmware drive do you guys have 1.0x or 1.1x?

I have an old NEC IDE 32X that has never failed to reading anything.
The worse thing is that I already spent like $130.00 in this Plextor piece of trash.

I have to make sure that they give me a good one this time. Please help.
Thank you.

My plextor 32x can't read copy protected CDs. (Yes they're original)
I always get the blue screen when I try to install or play with that drive. Its pure cr@p.
