Which RTS games have the best control schemes and the worst.....

...one of the best was the original Homeworld, its 3d interface was revolutionary for the time. Cataclysm was even better.

The worst was Star Wars Force Commander. Most people never even figured out how to control the camera inside that POS.

I like RTS with fixed perspectives like Warcraft III, sure you could zoom in but you could not rotate the camera and mess things up, I just thought the interface in that game was really nice and intuitive, hotkey buttons for each skill/command were highlighted, the buttons were big and pretty and every unit was recognizable.

I guess if we could include turn based in these I'd say Civilization IV's interface is pretty darn intuitive and pretty considering all the amount of stuff in that game.

Dune 2's was the worst but all is forgiven. It was a revolutionary game at the time and was the most fun RTS to date.

Best.... Possibly Starcraft. I still properly cant get used to the Left Click then Right Click to move but it was simple and easy.

I agree with you but Starcraft does have queing orders I think.

might as well just let the game play itself, eh? To me, the worst RTS is Tiberium Sun based on sheer disappointment factor. That game doomed the C&C series to always be second fiddle to Starcraft.

Yeah, no game with an artificial selection cap like that can be considered to have a good interface. That's actually what put me off Starcraft when I tried the demo many years ago.

Yeah the SC interface sucks. The 12 unit selection is one of the dumbest things I've seen in RTS games, especially in one like SC where using large groups of units is so important.

i didn't know it had queing orders but its not nearly as complete as TA where you could see each order and even take out an order while still maintaining the rest of the que'd up orders.

TA was one of the first games where you could que up orders and commands. it made shit so much easier.

Speaking of which, I played it over our network last night with my dad. That game is second to none, epic re-playability.

Second the vote for Supreme Commander

I third the nomination. The ability to zoom from a strategic map with everything on it to a tactical map map in such a short amount of time makes this my favorite.

Yeah the SC interface sucks. The 12 unit selection is one of the dumbest things I've seen in RTS games, especially in one like SC where using large groups of units is so important.

Warcraft 2 had a cap of 6.

I liked SC interface grouping units like that with the visual representations of each unit's health was nice to have. Of course being able to select every unit at once is a nice feature too.

Rise of Nations had excellent group management (different unit types would auto attack opponents which they were strong against), idle civvies would automatically find jobs to fill, units would automatically and quickly get into good formations, it was easy to move whole armies with one group since they automatically move with the slowest unit, you can que actions all day long, see and buy techs from the main HUD, press a single hotkey to access the nearest structure which has an upgrade available, hotkeys for every imaginable action, etc etc etc.

RoN did have a unit selection cap, but it was large and units condensed into types so it was only encountered in the end game with huge diverse armies.
