I can get away with 1280x1024x32, AA4x, AF8x. But I choose not to get used to that, because I know that later, I will not be able to use it because games will demand a lot more. Consistancy in Settings. If I always use those settings, then I would have to upgrade earlier. The spec sheet for my CRT says optimal resolution is 1280x1024, my monitor looks almost square and the picture looks fine.

Running Unreal II at 1280x1024x32 Vysnc off AA4x AF8x and Every master setting at high except for difficulty :). I get a nice picture and it runs smoothly, but there is response lag. What do you think could be the cause of that? It isn't choppy. I also think that AA and AF causes that, its not the first time, only this is much worse than before.

9100 64MB ? (64bit memory bus)
1024x768 ? 85Hz
AA and AF ??what the heck are those ? ???? ;)
16bit

You wouldn?t believe the performance jump on a 64bit memory card when using 16bit over 32bit (....maybe you would:p). I?m estimating that 16 bit is about 50% faster  (using Fraps on 3 games). It would be interesting to see what a 9600SE could do in 16bit.

lol, glad i talked you into trying it. sure you won't be able to get away with it in everything but you are getting your money's worth when you use it were it runs well. as for the lag, aa and af shouldn't cause such troubles on their own but it might have lowered the framerate to the point that it is noticeable in which case you might want to back one or both of them down a bit and see if it helps. you can also check your fps in unreal by opening the console and typeing "stat fps". oh and try just backing down to 1280x960 could do the trick too, and1280x960 is a 4:3 aspect ratio just like your monitor so you'll get a non-dstorted display unlike 1280x1024 and despite what the spec sheet claims is "optimal." ;)

Pole? And there's no option for my setting:

1792 x 1344 x 32.
16x performance AF.
0x AA.
Vsync & Truform off.

What do you think could be the cause of that? It isn't choppy.
Mouse lag is a side-effect of choppiness. You might think it's smooth but your input is telling you that you're wrong. Lower your settings and it'll get better.

Also turn of mouse smoothing if the game has such an option.

I've tried it before. I'm not changing my res. And the picture looks fine, it's not distorted. I'm fine without AA and AF. It's not that important to me to sacrifiec such a framerate.

Pole sounds like poll. There is now an option for your res., didn't know there was a game that was capable of that. What does mouse smoothing do?

I just tried STAT FPS on Unreal II, and it turns out I was playing at 13-15fps. If I turn AA/AF off I get about 45fps average. Dam, Unreal takes its toll.

1280x1024...I don't like to deviate from my Planar 17" LCD's native resolution.
32bit
I think the LCD is locked at 60Hz when using DVI, but I just looked at my drivers and it shows 75Hz as available...usually 60
GF4 Ti42008x(128MB)

measure your screen from left to right and then top to bottom, note that the hight is 3/4 of its width. now look at the dimensions 1280x1024, here the hight is 4/5 the width. hence, unless you adjust the screen to take sides in a ways to make a 5:4 aspect ratio, 1280x1024 can't be anything but distorted on your monitor. ;)

as for mouse smoothing, it averages out the samples from your mouse to make movements smoother. however, it does take a little time to accomplish this thereby adding lag to your inputs and with a decent mouse this shouldn't be an issue anyway so it is best turned off.

ohh ya, if get the patch for unreal2 if you don't have it already; it does wonderful things for the performance.

There are exceptions to every rule, and Morrowind is the exception to this rule =)
Mouse lag only occurrs in morrowind when the video card is no longer limiting the max fps... for example... the default maxfps in Morrowind is 60 fps... if I go inside a building that's very small and doesn't put much stress on the video card I get mouse lag... if I set the maxfps to 300, fps shoot up to the high 100's, almost 200, and mouse lag is gone.

1280X1024. People say it isn't the correct ratio for CRT, but it looks more natural to me than 960, probably because I'm used to it.

people say that because it is true. ;)

seriously, mesure your screens width and hight and you will see that it is a 4:3 ratio while 1280x1024 is a 5:4 ratio. if you use 5:4 ratio resolution on a 3:4 ratio display then an "O" does not look circle but an oval that is wider along the horisonal axis. granted you can adjust your screen to provide the proper aspect ratio but in doing so you will loose quite a bit of usable screen space on either side of the display.

oh and Jeff7181, i don't happen to have a link off hand but i am sure you can find one though the games homepage just like any other game with a patch, or get it from 3dgamers, gamershell, fileshack or werever else that offers downloads for game related stuff.

there is an update icon if you have the real version of the game.

And you're right, the screen ratio is 4:3. I tested it out before, but ever since I found that 12x10 was optimal, I started using it and it looked the same as all the others res. One thing that annoys me is that not all games support 1280x960. If you look at 19' monitors the optimal resolution is 1280x1024.
