Which RAM?

KingMax 1GB

OK, my question isn't really what RAM to get, it's more less what can I get. How do I know if I can put this in my computer? I have no clue what my motherboard I have, or even how to figure that out. I do know I can use 184 pin RAM though, (took some old stuff from my friend) but I don't know if I can use DDR400(PC3200). Also, how do I know if my board uses Dual Channel?

Thanks for any help =)

To see if your mobo supports dual-channel, use this.

Kingmax is good, stable RAM, but not meant for overclocking.

Please list your specs. Is this an OEM-built computer?

Dual channel--determined by memory controller (usually chipset, but it's the CPU if you have a K8-based Sempron, Athlon64, or Opteron) Doesn't affect the type of RAM you buy, but to use it you usually have to use two or four identical sticks (NF2s IIRC let you do things like 256x2+512x1).

PC3200 will usually downclock to match your FSB if it isn't 200MHz (400FSB Athlon XP, 800FSB P4, any K8, though the latter does not have a traditional FSB).

This is a Dell. I'm not sure what you want me to list though, because I have no clue what motherboard I have, but I do have 1.7GHz P4, and a crappy GeForce 400MX and I have 2 RAM slots, and I think a 200W PSU. That's about all I know.

I'm not really into OCing, I'm just doing an upgrade from 256MB, and I figured I might as well get 1GB. I just want to know If this will work in my system, no matter what it would be better than my current setup.

Ok. It's more than likely your motherboard doesn't support PC3200 RAM so it would be overkill. Use the program I linked above.

It's a 1.7 P4? It might use RDRAM, not DDR, because IIRC RDRAM is available in 184-pin flavors along with DDR. Use something like Everest or CPU-Z.
If it does use RDRAM, you'll have to check eBay or FS/FT, most likely.

Memory Bus Properties:
Bus Type: DDR SDRAM
BUS Width: 64-bit
Real Clock: 133MHz(DDR)
Effective Clock: 267MHz
Bandwidth: 2133 MB/s

Does that mean I need to just get PC 2100 instead of 3200?

It means you need to get a new computer ;)...jk

Yes,but just incase you plan to upgrade or get a new system in the near future it would not be a bad idea to get the pc3200 if you can afford it.

Well, considering the PC2100 on Newegg would run me $80 and this would only be $72 (mail in rebate) I think that's what I shall do. I do need a new computer though. Nothing bad will happen by me using PC3200 when I actually can't handle it will it?

I just don't want my comp to mess up.

That means you have PC2100 capabilities. Bandwidth = frequency x interface .... 2100MB/s = 266MHz x 8 bytes (64-bit).

Using faster RAM is not a bad thing. Your motherboard will use the RAM at lower speeds and that's just it instead of utilizing its full potential.

KingMax is not "crap". I have been using it for almost two years now without a hitch. I can even overclock to about 3.4GHz before it becomes unstable with Prime95.

nothing wrong with kingmax, I'm using it in 2 systems, I have 2x512mb sticks of PC4000 and 4x256mb sticks of PC3500, and they have worked fine.

Yeah, get the kingmax now and you'll be able to use it later when you upgrade :)
