Which RAM to choose?

So which one should I get? I will be getting an Athlon 64 3500+ and most likely will be getting the GigaByte K8NSNXP-939. Obviously the XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series would be faster, but is it worth the extra $70 over the Value Select RAM? Will I notice a big difference between the two? Or should I go with a different type of RAM completely?

I don't really have any idea of the differences in performance between different types of RAM, so any of your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Save $70 and get the Value Select. LL RAM is not worth the money as the perfomance increase it brings is negligible.

I have this set of memory, there is one little catch that newegg didn't make clear.

DISCLAIMER - the system in question is a shuttle an35n ultra and athlon xp 2500+, it may be different for the A64.

On Corsairs site (http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/xms.html)

TwinX1024-3200C2PT XMS3200 1024MB 2-3-3-6*
* These parts support 2-3-3-6 latency on Intel platforms, and 2.5-3-3-6 latency on AMD platforms.

My first set of memory (older revision) worked just fine at 2-3-3-6 for 2-3 months and then a stick failed (bsod/random crash, lowered memory timings and it worked for 5 more hours, then all I got was a memory failure beep code.)

I rma'd through newegg and they sent me a later revision of the memory, it will run fine at 2.5-3-3-6 but won't even touch CL2, but it is within Corsair's specs for an AMD platform. If you wanted definite CL2 timings you might need to spring for the true LL sticks (1gb 3200C2PT is $237, 1gb 3200XLPT is $320, and 3200LLPT is $339 all at newegg.) OUCH! :(

There really isn't a massive gain in performance for tight memory timings, and with the current pricing of memory the value ram should suit you fine, as long as there's a good warranty (usually lifetime) and the company will honor it should there ever be a problem, you'll be fine - of course with either newegg or corsair directly you shouldn't have any issues with warranty if it's ever needed.
