Which Radeon 8500 is 275/275?

I'm trying to find out if this model #: 100-431001 is the retail Radeon 8500 that has 275core/275memory. Is there any other way to tell the speed of the Radeon when it is still in the box? I don't think they state on the box that it is stock 275/275 do they?

I need to know before I make an order out for the Radeon 8500 cause I want to get the best deal for the 275/275 model since the oem and Le cost difference is minimal.

Only the retail Radeon 8500 runs at 275/275. The OEM runs at 250/250 and the LE at 235/235. You can get an LE or OEM and clock them up using PowerStrip or a similar app, but the only way you're guaranteed to get 275/275 is to buy the full retail box (which isn't all that expensive right now if you check someplace like Price Watch).

That's true, but I'm seeing the vendors list their cards as "retail Le", which would be 230/230 still, or retail and then I find out on their site that it's really clocked at 250/250. The oem sometimes is even shown as 230/230 or 250/250, but I want the 275/275 so that I get a card that is not overclocked but I have a bit more leeway in case I want to overclock some too.

That's true, I've seen that too, but they key is the "LE" in the name. I've even seen one retailer sell them as "Retail OEM" just to get people looking at the word RETAIL in the name. Shameless. Clever, but shameless. 🙂 Anyway, when I was pricing 8500's, I browsed through Price Watch and basically went to every site that looked like they were selling the retail model and checked their full product description on their site, because that usually has more info than the PW listing.

Yes, I have been going to their sites and reading up but sometimes they don't have the core/mem speeds and not much else besides "64Megs of fast ram.. etc". I want to make sure I get the actual 275/275 and not pay an arm or a leg for it.

I've seen this model: 100-431001 associated with some retail cards and I'm hoping that the Le version or Oem version are different models but ATI's site doesn't give much info on it.

That sux that Ati lowers the voltage so that you can't get the higher clocks out of the core/memory. The pencil trick looks cool, but a bit dangerous too cause you could put too much on it and fry the vid card. If I bought it online it could be hard to get a warranty.

Are you sure it's retail? I didn't see the OEM or Le versions listed there to differentiate them all. Chances are that it is the retail 275/275 but it doesn't even list the core or memory speeds.

True, the newest version out there does run faster, but I think it's based off of the r250 isn't it? Anyhow, it's going to cost alot more than the retail one that I want to buy now. I want the 275/275 cause I know it's a great deal for the money but if I get the 250/250 or (shudder!) the 230/230, then I might as well just buy the GF3 Ti200, which I would rather not do. I'd go with the GF4 4200 if it was out, but it's not.

I believe that the 8500XT is still based on the R200 core.

Ok, I checked out that part site for ATI cards and I did see the Radeon 8500 64meg there, but it didn't say how fast it was and I didn't see any part for oem or Le 64meg cards. If it has the ATI label on it, it should still have a part/model number there even for the oem card, and especially for the Le card. All I saw for the Le card was the 128Meg model.

Mavrick,
Generally speaking, I share your skepticism when it comes to online retailers. More than once, I've seen them list a video card as "retail", only to find out it's really an oem card (upon picking up the phone and calling them to clarify their claim). Also, just for your info, I just bought a retail ATI Radeon 8500 from Nova Computech, Inc. for 149 + 6 dollars shipping (which was the lowest price I could find on pricewatch for the retail 8500). I called them to verify it was the retail version, and they did. I just got it yesterday, and it was, in fact, the full retail version 🙂. Make sure you call the vendor and have them verify it is the retail version, shipping in the retail box, and it's not a refurb, LE, OEM, etc. before you make the purchase.

Thanx bocamojo, that looks like a good deal. I see it's on for $147 now at Nova Computech so it would make it around $153 to have it in my hands. Hopefully they give me the same info and that's for the same card. I think I'm going to order from there. How was the service? Fast? Packed good?
