Which PSU...

I'm trying to grab a good PSU for around $120 or less, and the Corsair 520w is like $118. I've also found an Aerocool one that is modular as well, supports SLI, is extremely quiet, but is 620w. What I'm not sure about is if the Corsair is good enough to make up for that extra 100w (they are both about the same price). Now I did look at the GameXStream 600w, and though it's similiarly priced it isn't modular and has a stupid LED fan (I can't stand lights) so I don't really want it. Basically if someone can answer my question about the Corsair or Aerocool, or if they know of any others $120 or less, it'd be a lot of help.

First of all it's doubtful that you need 520W, that's enough for SLI or crossfire with current cards.

However i'd be looking at the corsair myself, can't remember anything good (or bad) about aerocool, so i wouldn't buy one.

Well I want to have enough to support SLI so from everything I've heard I'd need 550-600 to be on the safe side. All the Aerocool reviews on Newegg have been really positive but I haven't heard anything else, which makes me a little iffy.

Newegg reviews aren't worth the effort of reading ;)

If you're sure you want SLI then you'll probably need more than 520W, the G80s look like they need 200W per card (all 12V). As far as an upgrade path goes it's not looking good at the moment.

Corsair contract seasonic to make PSUs for them, which is a good sign as seasonic are one of the best OEMs (orriginal equiment manufacturers) around. However there are cheaper brands and cheaper models that'll do the job for you just as well. (Enhance 5140 is a commonly recomened one)

I guess I should've been more specific earlier. If I get SLI, it will be with 7900's or 7950's. If I get a G80 I will almost definitely stick with just one for at least a year. So think in the area of a PSU that would support one G80 or two G70's.

OP, could you give us yours system specs?
On the aerocool: it's specs are vaugue and confusing. It states that it has 30 amps combined on the 12v rails, but that's the same as the 500w model. I'm guessing for high end SLi, you should go for the corsiar 520w, which has 40amps combined on the 12v rails.
Overall, corsair has the superior OEM, seasonic vs. aerocool's OEM, andyson. The aerocool is superior to other andyson psus though, it uses some teapo caps as well as one of the dreaded fuhjyyu caps, but that is secondary. Though the corsair doesn't have seasonic's quiet fan technology, it should still be pretty quiet and according to jonny, the aerocool is very quiet.
If you don't need SLi, get the enhance 5140gh. It has 80% efficiancy, 28amps combined on the 12v rails, and extremely stable, jonny did a review. Check it out. The thing to be said about the enhance is its price/performance factor. It is just $67 shipped and one of the best 400w psus you can get.
I guesss to sum it up, my vote goes to the corsair for sli, the enhance 5140gh if only single gfx.

My system specs are in my sig, except I'm going to get an X2 sometime and assume I have G70 SLI/one G80 (like I mentioned before) just for the sake of the future.

... in your sig... I feel like a fool.:eek:
g80 power consumption is uncertain thusfar. If it turns out that they are power hogs, it may be worthwhile to get an enhance 5150gh, a step up from the 5140gh. Same quality, more power, $12 more.
For SLi, get the corsair. If you want the corsair for g80, go ahead, but you can save some $$$ by going with the $80 enhance.

I just built my first rig in a long time and used a FAR ultra vseries 400W power supply, I know it cant be that great of a PSU considering the FAR, but I was hoping to understand why it's not good...

does anyone have any links to a good study guide for PSU's something to teach me what quialifies one as good an another as bad, also i could use some help in understanding how to figure out how much power i need in a PSU, ultimately i'd like to OC my E6400 and have several HDD's for mass dvd/media storage... wont need an SLI or crossfire vid card, thanks!

How the hell did I miss the aerocool review on jonny's site? :Q

Aerocool Zero dba 500W
* No PFC
* Mediocre efficiency
* Cables are very stiff
* Simply not enough power or PCI-e connectors for high end SLI or Crossfire

Well the one I was looking at was 620w but regardless that's probably the same throughout the series; I ended up getting the HX520w from ZipZoomFly, which cost the same on Newegg except at ZZF I got it overnighted :). Thanks guys.

Baked: You listed the mediocre and bad stuff.
This is what you missed:
* Looks totally rad, dude!
* Stable voltages
* Modular
* Fan controller keeps fan from spinning while PC is idle
* 135MM fan is quieter than typically used 120MM fans
* Fan only connectors
It's probably the best "bling" psu out there, and is pretty quiet.
Congrats wicka!

Those are not reviews on NewEGG!!! At best those are customer comments!

I guess the "Simply not enough power or PCI-e connectors for high end SLI or Crossfire" really made me not buy it, that's basically the whole reason I'm buying a new PSU. That and the modular cabling.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that you buy the aerocool, I was just correcting Baked's pessimistic view of the PSU, b/c he only listed the faults.

The diff between the 500W and 620W is the 3.3V and 5V rail. Useless for a modern rig. So I would just get the 500W. Same 12V rails.

FWIW: Two Aerocool Zero DBA's is good enough for quad cores, quad SLI: http://www.digitaltigers.com/stratosphere-hyperion.php :D
