Which PSU to get for under 180.00?

Hey guys. I might be in a dilema here. I have a seasonic 400W psu. This would have powered a 6800GT just fine. Well I opted for the 7800GTX, mainly cause i didn't order the 6800GT yet, and figured if I went with the 6800GT, I would have whined and cried and pretty much beat myself up for not getting the 7800GTX. The last part of my build comes in tomorrow, and I'm concerned that this PSU might not cut it. So I'm looking for another one just in case I need one. Which do you guys reccomend? I have 4 Fans running also if that helps any. Any help on this would be greatd

The 7800 is actualy supposed to draw less power, so what you got for the 6800gt should be plenty good enough. I was able to run a 6800GT with a prescott @3.5ghz and 2x36gb wd raptors with a 350w enermax, so any decent power supply should be plenty good enough.

Thats not what i saw. According to a release by nVidia, it reccomends a 26A for a single and 34A for SLI on the +12V rail for the 7800gtx. (well, that was pre-release - it may have changed).

An Antec TruePowerII 550W is more than enough.

Your current PSU is probably enough. How many +12V amps does it have?

The OCZ Powerstream 520 better yet, the OCZ powerstream 600.

Both are the best PSU's on the market, equall to PCP&C.

Ajustable rails as well.

I would first see if your current psu ran the GTX.

Did you know the GTX draws less power than one 6800Ultra.

If you feel the need to change your psu then, get the OCZ 520PS.

You'll be fine, unless the PSU is defective or something. I can't see a system like that eating any more than 250W from the PSU, probably more like 210-220W. Even accounting for the fudge factor with PSU ratings, that Seasonic will be more than sufficient.

your 400 watt Seasonic will be fine w/ the system you listed, I wouldn't try SLI w/ that PSU but for even a fully loaded system (2-4 Hdds, big CPU, 1-2GB and your video card) that PSU should be fine.

Never a buyer of ultra-high-end PSUs, so, under $180? Holy #$*&! PC Power and Cooling might also look nice.

My god, I'm using a 6800nu (uses nearly as much power as a gt) on an old used $25 300w enermax power supply that has 22a @ 12v. Sometimes you guys go way overboard on PSU's 🙂

And keep in mind that if Nvidia or someone else recommends a psu with a certain amperage, they're probably also taking into account that most people buy cheap no-name psu's.

The 7800gtx uses less power than a 6800 Ultra. You don't need a new power supply. Anyone who tells you otherwise is terribly misinformed.

Look at Anandtech's power consumption graphs:

I already linked to that...

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm anxiously waiting on the memory. They're only Value RAM for now, still thinking of what RAM to buy for good overclocking. Everything came in Friday, except for the memory. So for the past couple of days, I've had everything sitting there all put together but can't do anything with it cause I have no memory, now that's torture!

Yea, I'll be trying it out with the current PSU first, hopefully everythign works out right. I'll be running 1 High Flow Delta fan on the HS for the PCU, two 120mm panaflow or deltas and one more 92mm panaflow or delta all high-flowing. I don't mind the fan noise too much. That was my first concern, with all these fans running, and all running at higher watts than normal fans, would that put enough strain on the PSU for it to cause problems. And I will also be overclocking, mildly at first.

I don't plan on running 7800GTX SLi for now. Main reason why I got it, is so I don't have to run 6800GTs in SLi. There's only going to be one NEC DVD burner, one floppy, and one hard drive. I plan to pick up another sata drive for OS install. Thanks for the inputs guys. I'll keep you guys updated when the memory comes in tomorrow.

BTW: Just so you guys know, I'll be updating from a machine that ran 3Dmark 05 and only scored a 411! So I'm very anxious and excited about this new computer I'm building

lol, i read that as $180,000

How did 180.00 change into 180,000? I guess I could see 18,000 😛

Many other countries (Not the US, we are weird) use a comma "," as a decimal and a period"." as a seperater in numbers.

I know that, but there are only two zeros after the period...

(oh, and Shadow is from Michigan)

I don't really need one, I'd rather not have to buy another one. But just like with alot of things you buy, you get what you pay for. Either I spend the money now and cry a little, or spend more later for not buying the right stuff now and having to pay more to get the right stuff later. Does that make sense?

It does make sense, but not in this particular case. An FX-55 with a 7800GTX uses only a little over 200W under full load, and additional hard drives and fans will not bump that number up by much. Even if the Seasonic can only actually deliver 300W in the real world, you have plenty of headroom.

It's your money, of course. I just don't think upgrading to an even more overpowered PSU would be a wise use of it.

Bah. Try it with the old PSU first. Then come back to us and tell us if it doesn't work 😛.
Edit: My friend runs a 6800GT and a 3200+ on an Antec 350.

Thanks for all the help. Hoping the memory comes in by noon, so I can close her up and press the power button. I'll keep you guys updated
