Which Protocols for Home Network + security

I'm putting together a home network with an 8 port 10/100 netgear, and among other things would like to have full support for file sharing, printer sharing, gaming, and internet access via windows internet sharing or maybe WinGate home addition. My concern is this - I am unsuer as to which protocols to use to accomplish all of this and still maintain an ounce of security when I jump on the cable modem band wagon. And for the record - while I intend to use one, lets asume for a second that there will be no firewall and that Windows is actually hard to hack (Hey now - quit laughing!!!!)

Basically I want all of my comps to be able to see each other but at the same time not be vulnerable to ever script kiddy out there. (For the real hackers out there - all I can do is pray cause man have I seen some great hacks for winBlows ipx/netbios/file sharing combos)

So what do I need - TCP/IP - given
IPX?
NetBios? (and to which do I bind it to??)

Do I need to worry about a subnet, and DNS settings??? Do they have to exist and or be the same???***

***Note: - at least one of these machines will be a laptop setup for a schools network that runs dhcp. Not to mention my isp uses dhcp.

Side Question - if I weren't doing the internet sharing - what protocols and bindings would I need for all my comps to see each other? (Note above about the laptops would apply)

Sorry about the length - and thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this whole protocol thing

TCP/IP ? Bind to NIC (uncheck Default Protocol).

IPX ? Bind to NIC (uncheck Default Protocol).

NetBEUI ? BIND to NIC, and Default Protocol.

File sharing, and Printer Sharing, Bind to NetBEUI only.

netbeui for file sharing and microsoft client. tcp/ip shouldn't be binded to anything. for really old games you can also install ipx (with or without bindings); tcp/ip is the only supported protocol for the cable modem, so this way there isn't a security risk if sharing your files. oh, and disable netbios over tcp/ip (don't no why, for sure).

netbeui over TCP/IP means sharing your computer files with all of us on the internet =8O

Since I run older games, I run TCP/IP (unbound, no netbeui), IPX, and NetBeui over IPX. This last one is so that Windows networking doesn't force two browser election, one for IPX and one for Netbeui. Not sure if it really works, since my server is W2k, and is always up.

just my $.02
