so i'm running a p4 3.02GHz right now single core only. i've had it for about a year and it's getting sluggish. now i was thinkin possibly going core 2 duo now but my friend said wait possibly 3-4 months for amd's new processor, is there any word of a new processor in the next few months that will equal or surpass intels core 2 duo? if not should i get core 2 duo now?

If you wait 3-4 months, 3-4 months later there will be another latest and greatest to come out and you'll want to wait longer. Its a vicious cycle. :)

Personally I'd look at a Core2Duo now, E6600 is about the best bang for the buck you can do currently. QuadCore is out, but still we're not seeing all applications take advantage of two cores, yet alone four of them.

Obviously there are several other factors you can look at to increase your speed, hard drives, more ram, better video card, etc.

3-4 months is too long to wait, the industry reinvents itself every 3-4 months so you'll never feel like you're current.

The E4300 should be dropping in price quite a bit in the next month or two, however. Right now it's by far the best bang for the buck deal out there, you're pretty much guaranteed a 3 GHZ processor and can use cheaper RAM/Mobo components to get that speed.

amd's quad core (k8l) wont likely be on desktops before next fall (server versions might be out in 3-4 months) so if you want something soon then a core duo is good. How much money are you planning on spending and what do you plan on using it for?

hmm i'm not sure exactly how much i'm willing to spend, quad core seems very expensive since intels is like over 1k dollars. i was hoping to spend less then 1000 possibly around 600 but i don't see that happening, lol. i'm currently a student at college. i like to do a lot of music recording but i'm a gamer also, i just started vanguard and i know thats an intense game, i proly game more than i work on here, lol

What type of memory do you have? There are many variations of the Pentium 3.0Ghz, some using DDR, some DDR2.

Also, what kind of video card do you have? AGP, or PCIe x16?

It's possible moving to a new cpu would call for new memory and a new video card in addition to the motherboard.

You can definitely build a powerful $600-$700 computer with Core 2 Duo... just overclock an E4300 to 2.8-3.2 GHz on the stock cooler with a Biostar TForce965PT or Gigabyte S3 mobo and add 1 or 2 GB of CAS4 DDR2 667 ram and a midrange video card.

There's no reason to think about quad-core for gaming now... there's no video card on the market that could make the cpu in the system I just mentioned the bottleneck.

And I don't see any signs on the horizon of AMD beating the Core 2 Duo any time soon. I think now is a great time to build a new computer.

well hm well i currently have 3 gigs of 6667 ram and i think my vid card 7800gt is still pretty good. so i'm guessing i will go core 2 duo and maybe a faster hard drive, was thinkin 10k or more.
