Personally I'd look at a Core2Duo now, E6600 is about the best bang for the buck you can do currently. QuadCore is out, but still we're not seeing all applications take advantage of two cores, yet alone four of them.
Obviously there are several other factors you can look at to increase your speed, hard drives, more ram, better video card, etc.
