AMD Ryzen 5 1600X Six-Core Processor - 3.60 GHz
16.0 GB DDR4 RAM
NVIDEIA GeForce GTX 960 (need new one)

-I want to play things like Doom Eternal with the graphics turned up as high as possible and not worry about performance at all... Im looking for a high end card that will last me another 5 years or so.

Will $300 be enough or will I need to spend $500+? Id be willing to spend more if it is worth it.
Im not trying to settle on something only OK, I want the best performance I can manage without getting completely gouged.

**Also, would more ram help? Let me know.

Thanks!!!!

I would say the best bang for the buck would be the GTX 2060 Super 8GB video card for that computer. They start about $399-$429 range and would be a huge upgrade over what you have. I also like the extra VRAM from 6GB on the lower GTX cards to 8GB on this model.

Here's a great deal on a solid MSI branded one on sale for $397.99 - $10 instant promo code = $387.99

You can also get a 5700 XT for just over 400 (Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse), which out performs the 2060 Super by a pretty decent margin.

But with things as they are right now, lots of cards are sold out because production had been halted or slowed.

What is your current monitor? If it only does 1080p at 60hz, there's no point spending $500 on a GPU.

To be honest, now is a bad time to sink a lot of money into a GPU. A new console generation is around the corner, and lots of game engines are going to target that feature set for 5+ years. I'd wait for the next round of graphics cards, that are built with the same architecture as the consoles.

AMD's Navi 2 cards are tentatively expected later this year. This is the same GPU that powers the new PS5 and XBoxSX. But we have no clue on cost, release date, anything. Only that its coming, one day.

It depends on what resolution your display is, and what games you are playing. We would need a bit more details to answer that.

1920 res.
I want to play doom eternal on highest settings if possible.. 6750 VRAM it says I need, some ridiculous amount. My hopes were to enjoy the graphics without any worry about performance, that will last me 5 or so years at minimum. As you say if new cards are due to come out at the end of the year, maybe I can wait.. but thats kinda a long ways off.

If you have 1920x1080 screen, then you don't need a super high end graphics card to run Doom Eternal well. There are some fairly extensive benchmarks out there. Even an RX 580 can run it consistently over 60fps, at Ultra settings:

If Doom is the game you care about, you don't need a high end card. The graph above gives you a good idea.

I would suggest finding a used card to get you by now, and get new down the road if you still need a faster card.

If you want to get a currently available card, and want close to 144 FPS @ 1080p, I would be looking at getting a used of the following: GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti, Vega 56/64, GTX 1080, or a new 5700. But, as mentioned, better to wait a bit for the new ones. In the mean time update drivers and tweak settings on your 960 for good FPS.

I'd get a 5700XT. Your 1600 will hold you back by about 10% from what the scores in that chart show.

Several of the cheaper models like the Sapphire Pulse or PowerColor Red Dragon are perfectly fine. I have two Red Dragons.

Here are some actual figures from Techspot based on a 41 game average.
The 2060 Super is about 10% slower at 1080p and 8% slower at 1440p . link . I would consider either card more than needed for 1080p.

No regrests with my $440 1080ti Zotac Mini. One of the fan blades broke somehow, its so weird it may have been vengeful roomie perhaps but both replacing with some high static high cfm fans. Should run cooler then ever and run quieter too. I got these fractal 1,200 rpm 56cfm fans and they are pathetic.

I'd actually avoid Nvidia completely in the mid to upper range, because the RX 5700 and RX 5700xt just crush all Nvidia offerings. The RX 5700xt for $400 is much faster than the RTX 2060 super, in fact according to hardwareunboxed as much as 7% faster on average, and even coming very close to the 2070 super, which is a $500 card.

For $300 you don't have a lot of solid options, you'd be much better off to add $40-50 more and buy a RX 5700, it's the best value card for around that price, with the only card coming close in terms of performance and value being its more powerful brother the RX 5700xt.

The RX 5600xt is decent, but the quality models sell for around $300, #310, so you'd be much better off adding $40-60 more and going for the RX 5700. The 5600xt also only has 6GB of vram and Doom Eternal does use as much vram as you can throw at it. In fact if you lack vram it won't even let you set some settings higher. So having 8GB of vram is a must for Doom Eternal and for all future games as well. The next gen consoles are basically just 5-6 months away, and they come packed with 16GB od GDDR6, games are going to be utilizing 8GB of vram like nothing!

nice response. the RX 5700 and 5700xt seem to be the one a lot of people suggest... but holy CRAP.... next cards are going to be 16GB DDR6! .. I see why many are seeing to wait. If I do pull the plug now I think itll be on that card, otherwise, I gota buckle down. Thanks!

Those are rumors, we don't have any actual evidence of how much memory they will have. But the new AMD cards should have a similar feature set of the Xbox Series X.
