The Zalman is slightly louder and operates a bit cooler than the Seasonic. Both are very quiet. The Zalman also comes with a free multiconnector (1 Molex -> 2x 12v 3-pin, 2x 5v 3-pin) which will save you some trouble. So break off from the Enermax/Antec/Vantec hegemony for a change...
I usually tell people that any 350w power supply made by antec, enermax, or sparkle will be fine and can handle most systems out there. Sometimes the fans will be noisey and I just replace them with panaflos.
I'm using an Antec TruePower 330w, its strong & silent 🙂 Btw, I *seriously* doubt you need a 500+w PSU. I'm 99% certain that a *quality* <350w PSU will do the trick quite well.
We are posting a 4 way PSU shootout between Enermax, Vantec, ThermalTake and Antec within the next week or so. I hope it will answer some of your questions!
I would say the PSU with the best balance between stability (with their voltage) and silent performance would be the Antec True Power series. Even regular Antec PSU's have quiet fans. In contrast, my Sparkle 400watter has a fan that sounds like a storm is going on🙂.
Antec's are also readily available so looking for one shouldn't be a problem.
PCToys has 420, 470 & 520 watt aluminum cased PSU's, have 3 speed-adjustable fans, and include a switched 120 volt outlet for plugging in a 120 volt water pump or a monitor. Similar to the Vantec, but configured more for home user than the Vantec, which has connectors made for server use. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?sku=P261-5520
(Anyone have a better source than TigerDirect (bad reseller rating)?)
Something to consider, is that a higher wattage PSU should stay cooler (and require less fan noise) than a lower wattage PSU. And an aluminum casing dissipates heat better than a steel casing.
