Which Pocket PC!?

Before I bought my Ipaq 2210, I was looking at the Toshiba... I think it was the e755. Everything seemed perfect, except all of the reviews I read said that because of problems with the buttons on the face of the unit, it was almost impossible to play fast-paced games.

Have you tried playing any games using the bottons on the front? What was your experience with them?

The problem mentioned in the reviews was that the buttons "lagged", from which I assume they mean that it takes too long for a button press to register. This has apparently be a problem for toshiba for quite some time, over a few different models before the e755.

Sorry to bring this up again, but I've been told the Asus 620BT pocket pc is very good. Shall I hold on for this instead of the ipaq 2210?

Here is some comparisons I copied from another site. I hope I'm allowed to do this:

A620:

- Only one slot, but it's CF (cheaper, more versatile).
- Some users report excellent screen, better than 2210.
- Fastest PPC overall.
- Excellent battery life, better than 2210.
- No bluetooth.
- Roughly same price (give or take $20) as 2210.
- Thinner than 2210.

h2210/2215:

- Dual slots.
- Not 'the fastest' but still right up there.
- Better market placement and sales = more accessories.
- Battery life is good, but probably not as good as the Asus.
- Thicker (2 slots), but has rubberized grips for easy handling.
- Cradle can charge two batteries.
- Integrated bluetooth.
- 'Street price' similar but retail list $50 more than A620.

A620BT:

Same as 620 but add:
- Slightly more expensive than 2210.
- Integrated bluetooth.

The ipaq has CF and SD slots, what would I use the SD slot for? Just for more choice/alternatives?

SD cards are smaller, and seems to be the way the market is shifting. CF cards will be around for awhile yet. Are the SD slots on the ipaq SDIO?

And look for support as a big part of your decision. ASUS can be real hit or miss on products...

All new iPAQs have an SDIO slot.

I'd personally stay away from the Asus. The iPAQ 2215 is hands down the best PocketPC on the market for the money IMHO. Plus the factory support and 3rd party support (cases, batteries, sync cables, chargers, stylii, etc.) is second to none.

**Loves his 2215** 😀

I have a 512MB Panasonic SD card that I use along with a D-Link DCW-660W Wi-Fi card. I installed PocketWarrior and drove around my neighborhood here in Raleigh to check out how many Access Points I could pickup. In less than a 1/4 mile of driving, I picked up 35 AP's with only 5 of them having WEP. Tisk Tisk🙂

Anyway, the 2215 works just great. The battery life is excellent, the screen is great (not quite as good as the high watermark 1910 scree...but damn close), this puppy is fast as hell and the WiFi comes in handy here in my house to connect to out DI-614+ wireless router. I also use it to connect when I'm on campus (usually in the library).

I am currently using a Sony Clie NX70v which is pretty damm good at video playback. You can also add the memory stick pro cards to it which can hold up to a gig.

Not sure if this would be right for you if you want to use windows but the screen is absolutely great. Doubles up as a basic digital camera which is quite cool and there is loads of free software available as well.

The later versions of the clie can take compact flash cards as well.

Pricey but don't ignore something like it if you are really after video and audio. Battery life on them is pretty good too.

Nothing against Pocket PC's (I own one!), but it sounds like you really need a cheap laptop computer. The tiny speakers built into Pocket PC's play MP3's horribly, and the screen is too freaking small to play any decent sized movie clips.

Anyway, if you DO decide to get one, buy a model with a CF slot. That way, you can get a 1 GB Microdrive for it, and play all the videos and MP3's you want.

Oh, and don't get a Toshiba e740. It's cheap now, but they can't be upgraded to the Pocket PC 2003 OS.

Puhlease, they're easy to ignore.

Can the Clie do WMV, RealVideo, RealAudio, MPG, AVI, DIVX, ASF, ASX, MP3, WMA and OGG??

Didn't think so😛

in reply there is quite a good file convertor which takes most image and video formats a converts them to clie 'format'.

I don't use my clie for video and audio a great deal as thats not the main reason I got it but it's worth considering all the same.

I choose to use the clie rather than a pocket pc type because it's got a great battery life and is well suited to my job, the onboard camera is an invaluble tool for me.

The problem with the Clie is that it's so big and heavy. Battery life isn't all that much greater than the iPAQ 2215 (and the 2215 has a removeable/replaceable batter). Not to mention that the built-in camera on the Clie is more novelty than anything else. I wouldn't use that thing for pictures if my life depended on it. I'll stick with my Canon A70.

Also, why bother with converting files when you can view them in their native format on a PocketPC? And 1GB MemoryStick cards are EXPENSIVE. You can get a 1GB Microdrive for under $200. You can also get a 1GB CF card for under ~ $189 after MIR.

Not to mention that the Clies are WAYYY overpriced😛

Ok, I won't wait for the Asus 620BT then! I'll be getting the iPAQ 2210 some time this week. I think the Asus Pocket PCs are a bit cheaper here in Hong Kong though compared to the rest of the world, since they're a Taiwanese brand.

Yeh, it does sound like I should just get a laptop, but I've just got it in my mind that I want a Pocket PC. I would like a new gadget to play with, and watching movies (hope it can be done comfortably!), listening to mp3s, and playing games with something I can put in my pocket would be very useful.. especially with all the travelling I seem to do.
