<< unlike a puny 9mm

Trust me. A 9mm has more stopping power than you'll ever need at the close range pistols are intended to be shot at.

btw, 9mm = .38cal
>>

Yea, most people think they need a big bullet to stop someone... It isn't the range, the size, or the speed... It is bullet placement...

I'd rather be shot by a .45 ACP in the arm than a .25 ACP in the chest...

If you cannot put the bullet on the target each and every time, it isn't the right gun for you (for that use anyway, if for fun, own anything you want)

<< I have no ideas about guns. What do I need in order to purchase one? I know that I need a license, but of what else are the requirements? >>

Why do you need a license? What state are you in?

One way to do it is research, find a local gun shop and talk to the people there, find someone who is a gun nut like us and chat with him. Let him know this is your first purchase and you'd like to know the basics... Most gun people are very friendly and will give you the quick intro lesson...

Try renting first, most people are very surprized at how a gun actually is in real life... They are loud, the bullet often doesn't go where you want it to, and they kick...

That being said, with some pratice, they can be loads of fun (no pun intended), they are also the only fun toy you'll ever buy that can save your life... or take it, so be sure to learn the gun safty rules as well, these are deadly items, don't joke around with them...

I'll start you off... Rule #1 - Don't ever point a gun at a person you don't intend to kill, ever... doesn't matter if it is loaded, unloaded, whatever... you just don't ever, ever do this. If you follow this rule, you can survive most firearm mistakes without serious problems... You're better off shooting the wall by mistake than your friend or yourself...

I agree with Jehh if you have the money get a Kimber. Sorry didn't mean to bash the Beretta, they make fantastic shotguns, just wasn't thrilled with the 92F, is good, just too much for what you get I think, but then again I wish HK's were cheaper too, lol.

<< schmedy:

it was a graduation present from my parents dude....cool down. They told me I could choose a pistol for around 500 dollars. Sorry to hear you don't like the beretta, it is a very reliable and accurate pistol. I meant the ammo is cheaper. I can get the ammo for about 1/3 of what I can .45 ammo for. Geez dude, don't get so upset.
>>

He is upset because the government forced the 92F down the military's throat... It was to get standard with NATO forces in case we had to fight together, we could share ammo...

The 92FS is a better gun than the 92F was... I own a Taurus 92FT myself, copy of the 92FS... Nice gun, but I'm more of a .45 guy myself... :D

Well, I figured if he was looking at a Glock or HK, he could afford a Kimber... Several hundred bucks more than a Springfield, but I would trust my life to a Kimber, I wouldn't say the same about a Springfield... The SF guns are nice, but not as well made...

I personally like the 92FS, but a Beretta shotgun? For pete's sake, which one? :) My shotgun love is also my only shotgun, a Benelli M1 Super 90... Finest shotgun money can buy... Never a fail to feed, never a fail to fire... Goes boom every time the trigger is pulled, light weight, and cycles on every type of ammo I've used, including smoke, flares, and even blanks (AFAIK, the ONLY semi-auto shotgun in the world that can do that)

I understand where you're coming from dude. To each his own :D

as for the military dropping the .45, that is such BS. They should have stuck with it, to hell with ammo compatability with NATO. I'm not saying the 92 is better than the .45 I'm just saying its a good handgun, and the ammo is much cheaper :)

Bang... Opps, sorry about that... :p

j/k

I like guns, I get suck a kick out of them... Don't ask me why... I also love military stuff, been a military nut since I was a kid, I was the only 10 year old I knew with a copy of Jane's All the Worlds Aircraft and All the Worlds Armies... How is that for uber geek? :D

As for the safty, I prefer to carry with a round in the pipe... The safty on my Colt Mustang had come loose (I had tried to work on it the week before and messed it up), but I keep carrying it anyway (stupid, I know... you learn the hard way sometimes). When I drive, I carry it above my visor, you cannot see it from the outside, but I can just grab it with one hand (I've been approached in the parking lot before so I picked up this habbit)... I was about to get out of my truck at home, reached up, grabed my gun, was about to holster it, and foolishly put my finger on the trigger (yea, stupid, never do that, it was 1am, what do you want)... I put a round right through my windshield (this was in my blue Explorer I was trying to sell here, that I finally sold on eBay)... Scared the hell out of me, thank god no one was in front of my truck at the time... I stopped carrying that gun until I got it fixed... I won't carry a gun without a safty again... And that is why... :(

That mistake only cost me $210 to replace the windshield, but it could have been much worse... That was $210 I was happy to pay, very minor price to learn a great lesson... If you have a gun, sooner or later, you'll have an accident... Always keep the business end pointed away from people, loaded or unloaded, whatever... mistakes happen, that time it was just a windshield...

I will say this... my windows were closed and I hadn't opened the door yet... I couldn't hear for an hour after that... that also scared me, but no blood ran out my ears, so when my hearing returned after an hour or so, I figured I was fine...

I have a Sig P226 .40 which an excellent piece. I wasn't even thinking Sig, I was leaning towards a 92FS, but I stumbled across a deal I couldn't pass up. The P226 was in mint condition for $380. Somehow I think they mispriced it. And .40&W rounds aren't hard to come by, they're common now.

<< I got a beretta 92 9mm (EXCELLENT weapon by the way. I love it). >>

I have a 92fs. love it... lots of fun, bought it cause ammo is cheap.. 10 bucks for 100 rounds.... vs. 10-15 for 50 rounds.... and at around 10cents a shot I can't afford to reload for that price. and my wife loves it... (that's the important thing wife is happy, your happy)

I also carry the 92fs concealed.... but for stoping power, i'll take my S & W model 686, stainless steal 6.5 inch barrel .357 with HOT hand loads.... talk about fun!!!

You carry a 92fs concealed? What are you, 6' 6" tall and 250 pounds? :D

I'm 6' 200 pounds and I cannot reasonably conceal a full size gun on my body... :(

I understand what yer saying 'bout bullet placement. But if you carry for self defense I really doubt that yer gonna have time to take aim and fire if you have to pull your weapon. Odds are it's gonna be "Oh sh*t," unholster and shoot from the hip. All's gonna be said and done in a couple of seconds. If I thought I'd have time to take aim in a self defense situation I'd carry my .22 berretta (Smoothest firing pistol I've ever shot and I can put all 11 rounds in 2" pattern @ 40ft).

I have fired a HK P9S back in the day, and it was AWESOME. Little recoil and FAST muzzle velocity. Though it WASn'T the 45 cal. I would think the 45 would be just as good of a piece. I fired the "standard Issue" 45 in the Corp and I don't think they are as acurate. But you can drag them through HELL and back and they will WORK! Plus (and I guess this would be the same for any 45) if you hit someone ANYWHERE it will knock them down!

I own a H&K USP .40; I really like it but should have handled and shot a large variety of pistols before picking the USP. If I would have checked out other pistols at the time I probably would have purchased a glock or sig.

<< 1. Glock 21 - does anyone have any experience with this "safety system" (no switch) >>

I don't trust this at all. Lots of law officers have accidently discharged their Glocks because they didn't have a saftey.

I'm partial to 1911's myself. Springfield makes some good ones, they also supply them to the FBI (you can get a civilian model of that one, its the TRP). With Kimber, you're paying a premium for the name as well as the quality, so keep that in mind.

I don't find consealing my government model (full size) 1911 at all. Of course, I'm 6'4", 235lbs too. It's a little tricky under a regular tshirt, but under a suit coat or jacket, it's quite possible.

They're all very good guns, I like Glocks myself, have a 22C & a 26. When I got back into pistols all my cop friends recommended the Glock & I listened, never regretted it.

Glock safety or lack thereof is lame, lots of police have accidently fired every weapon issued to them, but I have heard Glock is planning on making versions of it's pistols with a safety, and there are mods available (but I wouldn't trust them myself).

Go to a range & shoot a box of shells through each one, you'll find a favorite right away.

I never expected to like the 1911 till I shot one, if you get a Springfield Arms, go for the stainless. 1911 also has a million & 1 mods available, sort of fun to look @ what's available & mod one into a race gun.

H&K makes awesome weapons, & they fit my hand well.

You've got 3 good options, look for a range that rents guns & pick a favorite.

How do you like your compensated 22c? I have never fired one, and can't find a range that has one.

JackHammer,

I really like it, there are some arguments against the porting, if you use it @ night, it'll reduce your sight because of the flash in the dark, etc. Just had some Meopro sights installed.

I currently have a 357 Sig conv bbl in it, the conversion bbls that have come along make handguns a lot more versatile.

Tauren there are plenty of........ preban mags out there, its just since he is looking at a .45 they are quite expensive. Iknow for the glock the 13 round ones are 75+, and I haven't got one for the USP yet, but even the 10 round ones I've seen are well over 20.
