Which Pistol?

I have decided I want a .45 The three I am considering are

1. Glock 21 - does anyone have any experience with this "safety system" (no switch)
2. H&K USP .45
3. Springfield Arm 1911


I can't find a price on the USP (didn't see any in the shotgun news) but the other two are around 500-700. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with these guns.

Are you serious? I was under the assumption that a .45 was fairly powerful. I was going to get a 9mm, but they are way to weak.

I want a standard size, high power handgun. Any others I should be looking at? I was thinking a .40 but the ammo is a but harder to come by.

H N' K dude all the way, but I would do a .40 or something, .45's jst really seem to LOB when you shoot em, a .40 still has a nice piece of lead unlike a puny 9mm but also has some more speed and less recoil so you get some better accuracy. But if your set on a .45 hey, still a sweet round, the only .45 I've ever used was the Colt, old faithful

I have a Sig Saur P229 right now, but if I could have afford it, I'd have a HnK anyday, put any of the rest underwater and see about shooting it, HnK is the only one with the sealed Gas Chamber.

get a 1911.....you won't regret it. I would have one, but I couldn't afford to shoot it on my college student budget . So instead I got a beretta 92 9mm (EXCELLENT weapon by the way. I love it). But the 1911 is my dream gun....sigh.

BTW, you asked for experience....my freind has a WW2 original colt .45. His grandpa carried it in the war. It still shoots like a dream, and is totally reliable. Excellent accuracy for a gun of its age. These guns NEVER wear out...they just get better with age

All the arms you mentioned are fine guns.

I can vouch for the Springfield Arms 1911, great piece of workmanship.

I am partial to the .45 round myself. But many law/govt officers are using the .40 round with good success.

I would go to a range that rents guns and try a few different cals and makes. No one can tell you the perfect brand/cal for you. What feels comfortable to you, only you can tell. Good luck.

Shoot them all before picking one... I've found that a gun I like based on the "feel" of just holding it or just seeing it often is very different once I've shot it...

Personally, I'm a 1911 kinda guy myself, but the USP is a great gun too...

Many people swear by the glocks, they are indestructable for the most part... I won't own one because of the lack of a manual safty, gives me the willies...

Naa, I'm not asleap...

The HK gun should always fire for you... If you're buying for self-defense, get either the Glock or the HK... I wouldn't buy a Springfield... Get a Kimber... Expensive, but worth it...

And worth every penny... Is cost really the most imporant factor when buying a firearm? Depends on WHY he is buying it of course...

Actually, for all the flack Glocks get, they are really amazing guns... There is a reason why 1/2 the police departments in the US carry them, they fire everytime you pull the trigger... You can drive a tractor trailer over them, they will fire underwater (why would you need to is another question)... I'd own one myself, but the lack of a manual safty bothers me...

He didn't say... The ammo is expensive, the .40 S&W round is probably better overall from a self-defense point of view, but I own a Colt 1911 myself, so what can I say... The .45 ACP is a classic, nice round, easy to shoot, low recoil (in a full size gun of course)...

have had the Glock 21 for over 5 years and over 3k rounds later not one problem. Just got a HK, very sweet, little expensive, but not too much $575. 1911's are great, lots of parts, cheap mags, but then you have to pick a mnfg too. K63, wtf are you talking about 92F's are way more then most standard 1911's unless they are tricked out, and the 92F is a pos, we had them in the Marines and I hated to shoot them, missed the old 1911's. What is your budget? That should be your big question as well as what kind of shooting, competition get a high end 1911.

The .40 S&W round is now standard, many police departments carry it, and it has balistics that are superior to the .45 ACP...

Too much kick for my tastes, and costs too much for casual shooting...

Then again, I carry a Colt Mustang Pocketlite in .380 ACP for self-defense... It isn't the power of the round so much as it is bullet placement... I can drop a 300 pound man on drugs with that if I put the bullet in the right place... You can empty a .45 into the same man, but if the bullets don't hit anything imporant, you won't stop him...

Trust me. A 9mm has more stopping power than you'll ever need at the close range pistols are intended to be shot at.

btw, 9mm = .38cal

it was a graduation present from my parents dude....cool down. They told me I could choose a pistol for around 500 dollars. Sorry to hear you don't like the beretta, it is a very reliable and accurate pistol. I meant the ammo is cheaper. I can get the ammo for about 1/3 of what I can .45 ammo for. Geez dude, don't get so upset.
