Which PIII to overclock from 100 to 133Mhz: 750Mhz or 800Mhz?

So the question is, which is more likely to happen:

(1) Overclocking a PIII 750Mhz (@100Mhz bus) to 997.5Mhz (133Mhz bus)

(2) Overclocking a PIII 800Mhz (@100Mhz bus) to 1064Mhz (133Mhz bus)

I'm Also looknig for that info;and is there a advantage to buying the 100Mhz FSB over the 133Mhz FSB Chip?

There's a HUGE advantage to buying a 100 MHz chip over a 133 MHz chip. Since Intel's CPUs are multiplier locked, you have to crank the FSB's WAY up high to get a decent overclock out of a 133 MHz CPU. For example...

I just got a 700e, which is the 100 MHz FC-PGA P3.

I'm currently running it at a FSB of 143 MHz, for 1001 MHz total.

If this were a 733/133 chip, instead, running at a FSB of 143 would only result in a CPU speed of 786.5 MHz. To get at or above 1 GHz you'd have to be able to run a FSB of 182 MHz. There isn't a stick of PC133 in existence that'll do that kind of speed. You MIGHT stand a chance if you ran the memory at -33 MHz, but you'd still be stressing the hell out of your AGP & PCI buses.

Get the idea?

Yup, thx for the 100Mhz FSB info,
anybody know what P3-800E Socket FC-PGA's O/C best, or what ones arn't good, ect.

Would it be cB0?

"I believe all P3 over 800mhz are cB0 stepping..."

Definitely no guarantee of 1000+ speeds though.

I would appreciate it if people would respond to my question, rather than Majik's. ;)

Majik, start your own topic next time, please.

I would say you are probably more likely to push the 750 to 997.

Also, I am seeing a lot of people with P-III 700's with cB0 stepping hitting 1Ghz at 143Mhz bus. If you have memory that you know can hit this high of a FSB, you may be better of going with the 700 and saving some cash.

Fun Guy - definitely more likely to get a 750 to 133 than an 800.

think of it this way. 1 gig is the pretty much the practical limit to the current cumine core regardless of whether its a 600E or a 933EB - makes little difference, except the higher clocked chips are much closer to their natural limit. to tell you the truth, the 700E is probably the sweet spot right now as far as chips with the most potential.
