So with my current phone(blackberry), you need a data plan in order to get gps because it needs to download maps in real time.

Are their phones that act like a 'real' GPS and does not require any service and/or data plan to operate?

GPS these days run by itself without any further service charges, so are their phones that has that feature built in?

The Mio 550 looks pretty neat... but it doesn't appear to be a cell phone. I read the description, followed the link to Amazon to buy one and read the description there. I didn't see the cell phone part of it.

You can use GPS with google maps for free on just about any phone(no voice guidance though & definitely uses data).

The Nokia GPS phones offer a free version of their map software, and a pay version that includes voice guidance. I believe you can pre-download the map data onto the phone using your regular internet connection/USB, that way it doesn't need to access your data plan.
