This is for linux, so please don't blindly recommend stuff based on benchmarks you've seen, as the driver situation is VERY different in linux.

First of all, does radeon have native drivers yet in linux, or can it still only be run through DRI?

Secondly, I don't mind using the closed-source nvidia drivers (I am now for my geforce2).

So can radeon and their "fake" drivers keep up with nvidia and their linux drivers? I'd probably pick up a geforce3 ti500 just because they are so cheap.

Go nVidia all the way - Their new driver install is so easy now just one command. You still have to edit r X config file though:(

My Ti4600 gives better performance under Linux than it does in Windows in Q3A and UT2K3. Nver used ATI under Linux on my PCs

I'm well aware of the install process, as you failed to note, I currently have the drivers installed :)

But if I'm buying a new card, I'll be in the Radeon9700 range, and I'm not sure if I'd go with a Radeon9700 and some random ass drivers, or a GF4 ti4600.
