My moms birthday is on Tuesday and I got her this Sony Clie PEG SJ22/U and today I walked into costco and saw this HP PDA This one (I think) for 20 dollars more than what I spent on the Sony one. Do you think the HP one is worth getting over the sony clie?

To tell you the truth I'd stick with the Clie. My brother has one and it works awesome. I have a HP Jordana and it's a bitch.

ahem..

alright its time for pda-connieseur (sp?) boy to step in..

HP makes some of the finest handhelds around in the current market. They are all running PocketPC OS instead of Palm OS. Diff. people like different things depending on what they want in a PDA, but in my opinion PPC wins with the following features for example:
-multitasking
-multimedia
-TRUE miniature versions of Office apps
-speed
-memory
-expandability
-versatility

Many users would argue that the 1910 has the best screen in the PPC market. It's contrast and brightness are really superior to other models, and its compact side has yet to be matched by another PPC! It really is friggin small as hell. It's got an SD slot, but the 1910 doesnt support SDIO (Secure Digital I/O interface for future SD card add-ons like bluetooth, WiFi, etc).

**HOWEVER!** HP just announced 3 new PPC models that launched along Microsoft's slightly revamped version of their operating system, now referred to as "Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC". Amongst them are the iPaq 1940, iPaq 2210, and iPaq 5500.

The 1940 is the exact same form factor as the 1910, but this time HP has added BLUETOOTH, a feature only previously available in the 3870 and 3970 (i own one now). Awesome PPC, although the kicker is that many users have complained of a yellowish tint on the screen :( Can be had for less than $300 i believe.

The 2210 is a true Dell Axim-killer. Rubber grips on the side, same form factor, and the first HP/Compaq model to offer dual SD and CF slots! Bluetooth enabled, plenty of expandability... Runs for $400 retail.

The 5500 is a re-release of the iPaq 5400 which was plagued by a few little nit-picky problems. This model offers bluetooth and WiFi wireless communications, and it's also the first HP/Compaq to offer 128MB on-board RAM out of the factory! I think theyre around $600.

PocketPCs are the way to go if you wanna do a million things at once, maybe watch a film or two, listen to some tunes while writing up a document, play some games, go on the internet, connect to your Local network... its all here.

Well since this is a gift for my mom, I dunno if she'll even be able to figure out how to use the Sony Clie much less learn all the functions of the HP Jornda. As for me I think that PDA is more my type. I'll look into the HP a little more see what comes up, Thanks for the info

i'm a long time user, i just switched to PPC w/ HP ipaq h2215.

i could list all the pros and cons of each one, but better decision maker is to try for yourself.

if it's for your mother, than it might be good idea to let her try both of those. (since costco has excellent return policy)

just my thought is, if your mother isn't very familiar w/ computing and etc, PPC will be more headache than help to her.

Ive been trying to justify downgrading/upgrading to the 2215 from my current 3970:

-Mine has a larger, sharper, and brighter screen.
-The 2215 has a CF slot.
-Ive already installed PPC2003 on mine.
-The 2215 has not only the new OS, but the newer revision of the Xscale processor
(note: Intel said the Xscale would be more efficient than the previous StrongARM most companies were using. Problem was that the PXA250, the original incarnation of the Xscale, performed exactly the same. Eventually it was discovered that upping the bus speed yielded TREMENDOUS performance increases. So they rereleased it with the revision PXA255, which has gone from a 100mhz to a 200mhz bus speed. This thing is BLAZING)
-Mine has a larger iPaq File Store (a portion of the ROM [note ROM, not RAM] dedicated for non-volatile storage; if you do a hard reset and clear the RAM, your ROM stuff will still be there)

whadaya think?

though i agree that you should take her out and let her choose what she likes best and feels most comfortable with. PalmOS is definitely really simplified and easy to use, but PocketPC is definitely a robust and powerful system. Letting her pick her OS would be great, unless you really know that PPC will be overwhelming or something...

Best of luck, and let us know how it goes!
Any more questions post 'em up! ;)

HP's current offerings
just for kicks, heres what i have, just with BLUETOOTH!
