they are both the same price

intel i7 920 @ 2.66Ghz
6gb DDR3 RAM
ati radeon 4850

or

phenom @ 3.0ghz,
8gb ddr2
crossfire 4850's

Yep.

PhII 940 $235
790GX $120
8GB DDR2 $80
4850 x 2 $250 (rebates)

i7 920 $290
x58 mobo $250
6GB DDR3 $150
4850 $125

You do the math. 😀 I'll give ya a hint - even if performance was identical you're getting more expensive parts for your money. And performance isn't the same - the i7 will crush the PhII (just look at any of the reviews). The GPU is easy to upgrade (either add a second 4850 or sell the 4850 and get a more powerful card, depending on what you play).

You only asked what we would get.
You never asked what might be best for your situation.

If you want more of an answer, then supply more details of how YOU use your PC.

If you are not rendering, encoding or playing synthetic benchmarks look at 1650 x 1050 and higher resolution GAMING benches. The i7 costs far more expensive as a PLATFORM and systems do not run on chips alone. I'd do this kind of build for Phenom 2 - a single nice HD4870 1GB and a 790GX which costs under $600 for mobo+gpu+cpu+4gb rams! I guarantee you this combo will get you better frames than an i7 + HD4850 which costs a crapload more!
