Which PC component needs to be updated to use USB 2.0?

I understand that USB 2.0 peripherals are compatible with USB 1.1 PCs at the USB 1.1 speed. So which PC component needs to be updated/added to fully use the USB 2.0 speeds? Is it the motherboard compliance that is USB 2.0 or do I just need a USB 2.0 PCI card?

Thanks.

if the motherboard has only usb1.1 built in, you will need to buy a usb2.0 card. it is not a software/firmware upgrade. your mb manufacturer should have the specs for your mb.
good luck

A simple upgrade. Buy a USB 2.0 card and plug it in; depending on your OS, your might need to add the driver. I recently bought 2 of THESE. On 2 WinXP machines, I just plugged them in; it took about 1 minute and they were installed and working.

SOHOUSB 2-Port USB 2.0 PCI Host Card, Part No# I-205204VL --- $15 each shipped

Generally speaking, you need a USB 2.0 PCI card and a supporting OS such as XP with SP1.
