Here are 2 diff setups...need help in deciding which one will last longer...

i want to buy 3 pc, will buy after 26 july (when conroe releases) due to price cuts

PC setup 1 x 1nos
amd 5000+ or
asus m2n32-sli mobo, i know very expensive, something like this but cheaper...??
1gb ram (what is better 2x512 or 1x1gb - ddr2 667mhz),
300gb sata II 16mb cache (is it better to have 2 smaller sata hdd than a big one...),
no sound card (if there is one in the mobo),
bang for the buck graphics...(only but have to be ready for windows vista...)

PC Setup 2 x 2nos
intel d 940
a good mobo with the a good cooling system...sli,please
1gb ram (2x512 if cheaper)
sata II lowest size
no sound card if available in mobo
graphics should be the below let say 120usd

any cooling req...if not, the better...and can you suggest similar spec in amd or vice versa for both.

I would go with a lower end Intel Pentium D at that time and then I would switch to Conroe by next year.

If you like products designed by engineers that are shipped with the motto "Under promise, Over deliver" stamped all over them, you'll probably like AMD. Also? They're cheaper.

1. what will you be doing with your computer?

2. what is your budget?

3. how can you compare those two setups? they're nothing alike. an AM2 5000+ vs an intel 940?

4. why are you only getting 1gb of ram? get 2gb (2x1gb)

hi ali,

1. one of them is gonna be the server, which will handle multimedia games etc. will be installing vista, in all three (the beta version is on it way) (kind of which will keep documents and stuff) the other two will be working normal office stuff, sometimes handle pics etc, will be installing vista.

2. for budget lets say PC.A = $1000.00 dcore + sli mobo + raid
PC.B = $ 700.00 dcore + low cap hdd sata
PC.C = $ 700.00 same as pc.c

3. 3 diff computers to build

4. i thought 1gb is food 'nough.

would like to know ur opinion on the PC.

If your running Vista, youll likely need 2 gigs of ram or your gonna be hurting.

Id recommend an X2 based platform after price cuts to fit your budget better, although I would recommend any conroe over that. Please for the love of god avoid Pentium D's. A Conroe or any X2 would both be solid choices, pretty much at any speed (X2 3800+ is more powerful than a server is likely to use).

As far as mobo, I recommend either the M2N32 due to the ability to use both Gigbit ethernet jacks as one super jack (2 Gigbit ethernet). Although you likely wont notice any difference over somethign based off the nforce 570 non-SLI chipset using only a single jack. Plus they only have one PCI-e x16 slot, which is fine since a server doesnt need 2 video cards. Asus is a good choice no matter what though.

For video cards, vista compatible is anything that is direct X 9. Even a cruddy Geforce FX-5500 runs vista and aero glass fine on dual monitors. I know this because I installed beta on an old computer in my office and it runs ok with a FX 5500 and 1.5 GB ram, and the FX-5500 is a junk video card. You definitely couldnt go wrong with a 7600 GT (Silent Pipe 2 for quiet,). Or if you want better 7900 GT. Both the 7600GT and 7900GT fall directly on the price/performance peak IMO. But the 7900GTX is more money than performance gain, and the 7300 is too slow.

Seagate hard drives are my favorite. Hitachi and Western Digital are solid. Really just avoid Maxtor.

I'd look into the following...

Pent 940 (now about $218 shipped)
Asus P5ND2-SLI ($93)
2GB Corsair VS 667mhz) ($150)

Build around that. As for cheap video cards, 7600 GS should be fine at $120. For gaming, 256MB 7900 GT at less than $300 will do you good. But that may change in 30 days, who knows. You may also want to look into Core 2 Duo and an Intel P965 based motherboard, or whatever SLI boards are available. I have been liking Asus lately.

hi bamacre,

everyone on the forum is against D940 performance wise sucks...against x2, and x2 will be a bad option to buy now as we all know abt the price getting slashed the day conroe releases...now we come back to the question which one is better...

from july 24th,

my server pc will have the usd300+ conroe E6600 chip, i mean keeping performance and price wise.

and the other two should will have E6400, usd224 it is lower than x2 4400+ after the price being slashed which is usd240...

i mean the best bet is to wait....

Actually we don`t come back to the question which is better.
becuase you need to do your own homework.
As in google it and use your search engine.
Somebody mentions the d940 and you state everyone is againsts that...you have no clue.
With the advent of Conroe alot of AMD peeps are iether switching to Intel ot quaking in there boots.
Also there is NO guarantee that prices are going to drop when Conroe hits the market.
People say they are going to drop but be reminded prices do not have to drop.

Also there literally is no way to define the best that is agreed upon by the majority of people.

I'd say wait and see what happens to the market once Conroe launches in July. Now is not a great time to be buying a system.

Hi jediyoda,

i have googled, read a lot of articles and test benchmarks, and i have considering price /performance d940 is good but when conroe come it will blow dirt on both amd x2 and d940 (if thier prices dont go lower that is) price and performance wise, and mostlikely conroe will be in short supply and prices will soar unless x2 prices are really slashed...

I have been custom building my own systems and systems for other people for 12 years. I havent built a Intel based system since I built my Celeron 300(450 O/C) rig and I have no regrets. Now..having said that..in an effort to prevent a lot of Testoserone spraying...It really is a matter of personal preferance. I favor AMD do to value issues, but Intel hasnt made it this far in the market simply based on there good looks. There is a AMD and Intel rig that is suitable for each and every application when designed properly. I really dont understand you insistance on expensive SLI motherboards if you are going to put a $120 graphics card in them.

The Pent D 940 is an excellent cpu for it's price, especially compared to the AMD X2 3800+. As of right now, it is roughly $80 cheaper, and extremely close performance wise to the X2 3800+.

There will be further price drops on both cpu's when C2D is released, not just the AMD X2's.

That said, I would, and I did say it earlier, definitely look into C2D. But in 30 days, we won't know the availability of the C2D motherboards and cpu's, so if you are under a time restraint, and you need an alternative to C2D, I would go Pent D 940 over an X2 3800+, depending on what the slashed prices look like. You'll also want to consider prices of DDR and DDR2 memory at the time as well, unless you decide on AM2 over skt 939.
