Hi guys,
I need to choose within a day now. I got no computer except for a 486 computer for the internet.
My system specs:
Epox 4G4A+, two 512MB Samsung PC2700, ATI Radeon 8500LE. I think my RAM will go to 140FSB, maybe higher. But the store I got the RAM from said it would go 160FSB.
I cannot decide between the processors.

1.8, and your RAM will do 166 default, maybe more.

It depends on how fast you want your computer to be, if you want to overclock, and how much you can afford. I think the P4 2.4GHz(533FSB) is a solid choice and relatively cheap(around $190 last time I checked). If you can get a C1 stepping 2.4GHz P4, there's a good chance you'll be able to overclock it to around 3GHz without any trouble.

I'd go with a brand new CPU, although I'd spring for a 2.0ghz Northwood because its not that much more expensive than a 1.8ghz.

but dont overclock as well from what i remember
(unless its a new C1, it might be a good overclocker like the 1.8a C1 then..)

id go wtih the 1.8a

do you konw for a fact that the 1.6a wont go any higher than 2.1?

At the moment, best choice is 1.8A, C1 stepping. PC2700 is definitely going to work at 166MHz (I have the same chip running in my box at 177 MHz, a Samsung 512MB stick with rather good timings).

BTW, I've an 1.6A running at 2.13GHz with stock voltage. It could go higher (about 2.4), but since I don't have PCI, AGP locks on my mobo I'm leaving it where it is (166MHz was too much for it, unfortunately).

Depending on how much you wanna invest, and/or do with your computer you can go with this cheapest solution.

I cannot seem to locate the C1 chip other than PCClub and it's a rip off with OEM $169.99 plus tax for a 1.8A.

but if that 1.8a can go to 3ghz and beyond...does it still seem like a rip off :D ;)

I like the new chip and discovery its limits on your own....It is very likely it will just match the 2.26b, but that is the whole fun the hidden secrets...

hehe ~ the p4m cpu sure has the potential for being alot of fun for the more serious overclockers.

not to mention the curiosity of seeing 400-466ddr running in 1:1 mode is absolutely irresistable :D

I wouldnt count on the ram doing 166 or even 160. I have an asus p4b533e and picked up a stick of pc2700 Samsung ram and the stuff wouldnt do 160 using the 3:4 divider trick, while my corsair pc3200 stuff does it just fine. This is a moot point however if he isnt pushing the ram to higher speeds like a divider trick.

IMHO, samsung isnt the best stuff to be using.

Hi,
I have a 1.8A (B0 Stepping) on Epox 4G4A+ with 256MB PC2700 (cheap stuff), and now stable at 2.7 (150fsb) @ 1.65v/2.7v with stock HSF.
Works at 2.88 (160fsb) @ 1.75v, but don't want to risk it.
I have been on Seti for over 4 days non-stop and stable @ 44C.
Seems like oc'ed 1.8A's are good for the money :)

Almost all 1.8 is guaranteed to run 2.4 at default voltage. Or just buy 2.4 ( it's only $50 more)

I recommend going with the used 2.26GHz, but only if you trust the seller. The CPU should last plenty long; it can't possibly be more than a year old. However, you could get stiffed with a CPU that never worked properly if you deal with the wrong people.
