oldfart,
A new day dawns and finally there is a reasonably complete comparison of the various P4 chipsets, including the i845g. If you read the the test of the Epox 4G4A+ at ocworkbench.com it is clear that far from the clearcut advantage that you say the i845g has over the Sis645dx, that in reality the performance is very close with each chipset winning in various benchmarks.

from ocworkbench.com's review of the Epox 4G4A+...
"No doubt, this board has excellent performance. As we compare it to the rest of the P4 chipsets, we found that the i845G is definitely a solid challenger to the SiS645DX. The results are excellent in most categories."

My point all along has been that the Sis645 chipset motherboards deserve to be considered a viable alternative, not necessarily superior, other than in price, but also not inferior.

On a side note I consider OCworkbench.com one of the best sites for unbiased and thorough motherboard reviews, but that's just my opinion.

Funny, I was just reading that article. Yes, they are pretty close in the benches in that article. I'll still take the 845 over the SiS. The 845 will go to very high FSB overclocking speeds, where the SiS wont. Add the better IDE performance, PCI/AGP lock feature, and the rock solid stability of an Intel chipset, it is the best DDR P4 chipset IMHO. (We all do have our own HO's don't we) 🙂 I've seen several members here and @ [ H ] forums that have replaced their SiS boards for 845 for those reasons.

I would agree that they are a decent alternative. Certainly not superior, but overall pretty good if you are not an extreme overclocker. I just don't see any advantage other than price.

Now that we've established some common ground I'd like to add that the Epox 4G4A+ does look like a very nice motherboard, as is the 4BDA, and I've heard good things about Epox's tech support, which is certainly a rarity in todays motherboard market.
🙂
