Which P2P software do you use?

alright - very timely topic (for me) !

I'm a little behind the "toy curve" - but just got my first MP3 player.
thanks to Anandtech, up and ripping from my own CDs

Now to tap into the internet 🙂

Now for P2Ps, I've download Klight++ (not yet install) - but noticed different ones being mentioned here.

couple of questions:

1. is there a practial difference between the diff P2P programs ? (as in greater number of available songs) ?

2. security - are any programs better at keeping info on your drive separated from the .mp3 files that you intend to share ? (I read that P2P opens up your entire system to the entire internet?) In that case I wouldn't want to have my electronic credit card statment on the same system as the P2P.

Any suggestions or urls on security greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

i've heard of bittorrent... it's like a Overnet interface, right?

bittorent and bearshare (less corrupt downloads and you can remove the spyware and it still works unlike kazza)

1. All p2p programs serve the same purpose, share files; some do it better than others. You want a greater # of songs, pick a p2p class that has a lot of users in it. e.g. if you use Earthstation5, trying to find a rare mp3 file is harder than using KaZaa because not a lot of people us Earthstation5, yet.
2. P2P only opens up your computer to the rest of the world by showing the FILES YOU ARE INTENDING TO SHARE. IT doesn't expose your whole system (this is absolute because depending on the software, it can just do that.)

If you want security and not expose yourself to the RIAA, i recommend using FREENET or EarthStation5. Even though you share files, your identity is encrypted.

Cheers.

Put your flame suits on... file sharing, aka, pirating software/music/movies, isn't exactly encouraged or accepted on AnandTech.

I stopped using P2P about a year ago, but when I was using P2P my favorite one was WinMX. I'd use BT now if I was interested in sharing.
