Looking at high end CPU's from Intel and AMD.

i had this all written out...

basically, they both overclock very well... just a matter of having good luck and finding a magical chip that'lll o/c over a 1 ghz on air..

a 2.4C can overclock to 3.6 on air...

that's a 1.2 ghz overclock...

the 2400+ can hit 2.7 to 2.8 on air sometimes...

so it's about the same...

both overclock well... don't get sucked into the mobile hype... they overclock well but the p4's overclock just as well...

especially these 3.0's that have been able to hit the 4.0 ghz mark on air...

are you crazy? how about close to never?

never say never my friend. Check out various overclocking forums. People have already done it.

maybe not so likely for the desktop version, but the mobile versions are doing quite nicely...

Both Intel and AMD have some sweet overclocking chips right now, my nod goes to the Mobiles for their excellent price/performance ratio and unlocked multipliers for those of us without PC4500 RAM. When it comes to high-end Intel and AMD, though, I'd say they're neck and neck. I'd probably take an A64 for a primarily gaming machine, and a P4 for a multipurpose encoding/video editing/etc machine.

i know its being done, but what, the top 1%? 2.4-2.5 seems to be the average

Yes the average of people that are afraid to throw 1.85 volts or higher at our chips. ;) The mobile bartons respond very well to added voltage, and while it may not last long it is quite possible to hit 2.6-2.8 ghz on air w/ 1.9 volts or so.

well, 1.8 is generally considered to be perfectly safe, even in the long term, so with proper cooling 1.9 should last you well beyond the point where you'd upgrade the chip. I'd argue that most people would have upgraded before even 2 Volts would have killed their chip.

And once again, these aren't expensive chips we're talking about...if you burn it out after a year (which would indicate you had TERRIBLE cooling, since they should last for a decade or more at least), you're only out $77 :)

I completely agree. I was just pointing out that most people are hitting 2.4-2.5 ghz with 1.85 volts or less.

mine needs 1.9volts to handle 2.4ghz stable. it won't even push 2.5ghz with 2 volts.
