What is everyone's opinions on which OS is better...I'm just looking for an OS for a home user (no networking).

I'm looking at FreeBSD and Linux (preferably Mandrake)....thanks in advance.

Mandrake is easier for most newbies, but FreeBSD is the better OS, in my opinion. Both are free, try them both. Each one has strengths and weaknesses. But Mandrake will probably be the better desktop. Just make sure you understand a little about UNIX systems before trying it out. I dont want to see another thread about where the "a:" drive is on a UNIX system :p

I hope the originator of that thread can take that as a joke if he sees it. I think it was a little mean, but wasnt quite meant as mean :p

:D I don't like mandrake, since it hides so much. defeats the purpose of using a *nix (control :D). I personally love winXP, but would recommend RedHat if you want a *nix. unlike n0cmonkey, i dislike FreeBSD. probably cause I was too lazy to figure out the funky device naming scheme in /dev and couldn't get X working right with my GF2 (too lazy to download 4.x.x ;)).

I'd really recommend you dual or triple boot and figure out which you find best, then repartition and boot the OS you really do like

I was kinda pissed when I found out FreeBSD was still using 3.3.6. I mean, they are supposed to be the BSD on the cutting edge right? :p

yeah. Whenever I get around to dual-booting (i'm XP-only right now ) I'll give FreeBSD another shot I guess
