heres my system specs:
Celeron 850 @1.13Ghz
256mb pc133
Geforce2 GTS 32mb
52x cd-rw

ok so my system is old, but i would want to squeeze any amount of performance i could get without spending for any upgrades for now. basically this is use mainly for games, a bit of internet & cd-recording. so which OS sould i chose?

Win98 SE???
Win 2000 SP4???
WinXP SP1??

i just want it to be more responsive, with more performance especially when i game

thanks...

i would use Win 2000 SP4, it is better than 98 and i dont think it uses as much ram as XP.

BUT i would also get more RAM to make it even better.

I would use Win2k. You can try WinXP and turn off all the "fluff" but 256MB is kinda low especially if your gaming. You'll start to see a lot more paging using XP. Forget Win98.

Yeah, I don't see you gaining any performance w/ XP over 2k. You'd just get more bells and whistles.

XP SP2

Don't waste your time on 2k, while it's nice, XP is the current and best supported MS OS. SP2 greatly improves the security posture.

possibly. if you're a crafty coder, you might be able to write your own 32-bit subsystem that runs under windows 3.11. the included win32s just doesn't work for such things (at least i think it's included).

Win2K no contest. Forget linux, WineX just doesnt cut it for the majority of games.

Yup, Win 2000. I ran it on my Duron 850 with 256mb of Ram, and it was smooth enough. Never tried XP on this computer though, but if you consider XP, an upgrade to 512mb of Ram would help.

Only some games (the cheap $5-$10 kind) wouldn't run in Windows 2000, and it was really the OS fault, because the computer was a dual boot 98SE/2000 box and all ran fine in 98.

I would use XP. I doubt there would hardly any performance difference. XP is just better. You get more functionality. Not to mention XP might even be a few dollars cheaper and is an OS that will be supported even longer. Now if you already had Win2K I see no reason at all to go to XP. But if you are looking to buy an os then choose XP over 2k. The included firewall ain't half bad with XP either and with the sp2 looks like its going to pretty nice. XP is just better IMHO.

@tharaxes : naaa... i dont think i would still spend something for this over-the-age computer.. just wana utilized whats left with it..

well, i do have both Win2k & WinXP in hand  but currently using WinXP coz its newer & more eye-candy's :D but i really noticed it just use a lot of memory. but if anyone could gv me a link on how to optimize XP for a better overall performance & lesser memory usage, then maybe i would stick with XP... else i would revert to Win2K SP4 :(

You people (as in, people other than bsobel) are insane. He's obviosuly not going to be playing the absolute latest games on an 850MHz celeron + GF2 GTS (meaning nothing that uses 1gb ram)... does nobody remember running XP back when it came out? Those specs are fine for Windows XP.

edit: XP was released in October 2001. At that time, AMD had just released 1GHz durons and the first Athlon XPs (1333 -> 1533MHz). Intel had pushed the Celeron and P3 to 1.2GHz. MS doesn't release software that is slow on top of the line hardware at the time of release. I gamed on XP with an Athlon 700, GF2 GTS & 128 MB ram for a while, before upgrading to 256MB.
