Which OS is better for Gaming: Win98se or Win2000?

As long as your hardware has good drivers, there wont be much difference if any.
My GF DDR is almost exactly as fast in 2K as in 9x, the differences are definately within the marigin of error(like 64 vs 65 FPS in Q3).

I'd agree with many people here in stating that Windows 98 is "better" for gaming. Pure and simply because I have a number of games that refuse to work under Win 2000. Overall I'd rather be on Win 2000 as I have found it to be fantastic for everything else.

Anyway just my thoughts

Mikey out!!

There are many reasons why I would choose 98 over 2000 for gaming. One problem is the video drivers, even though theyre getting better, theyre not there yet. Nvidia 2000 drivers dont even have digital vibrance control! Also, as stated some games just refuse to run, and most run a tad slower. Also, I've noticed some other stranger problems with win2k, like a slight delay in mouse movement in counterstrike, and 3d sound doesnt always work properly on my sb live.

Yes if you go to some game forums you will see posts on problems trying to run some new games on Win2000,don`t get me wrong Win2000 is a great OS,but unfortunately not all games will run fine, yes you can blame drivers, the game itself or anything else but at this time it`s not 100% games compatiable, I`m sure things will improve remember Win95 for games when it first came out.

🙂

I would go for the long haul. Windows 2000...

98SE might be slightly better "today", but the gap is narrowing, and soon enough 2000 will surpass 9X.

If your title ended with "better" it would be a no-brainer. So "gaming" will be the only reason you would want to run 9x?

With your system (yes, put another 256 in it "384&quot😉 Games play fine on Windows 2000.

No one ever really developed gaming software for NT4. Mostly 9x. When 2000 came out it was the same, not much support. Now that it's been 10 months out, there is TONS of support for 2000, and it only going to get better... as the Gaming industry is seeing more and more people use it.

The long haul....

Don't forget about SMP. Sooner than you may think, more and more game titles will support SMP. Quake 3 is supposed to, although I haven't seen any benches on it... with a 9x system vs. a dual CPU 2000 system? Anyone?

I honestly thought that with Win2000, there would be a bit of an increase of Dual CPU systems... Intel and AMD need to get of their butts! As far as I know, only BX is STILL the only Dual system? Oh, yea, and 840... but who cares about THAT crap! :|

We need 860's and Dual capable 815's!!!! Come on! Get with the program! hehe
