Hi everyone.

My uncle has a computer with the following main specs:
PIII 450, 64MB RAM, 8GB HD
He is an amateur who uses it just to check his mail once in a while, playing a few older games (>2yr+ titles) and using MS Office.

Which OS would be best for him? Win 98/ME or Win 2k?
BTW, upgrading is not an option at the moment.

Thanks.

I'd say Windows 98.

Windows 98 is small enough to run well on that system. Get Second Edition if you can pick it up cheap.

go for win2k and buy some ram.... $30 in RAM will make it MUCH faster. Win9X;s are all unstable crap, stay away from them.

If the games run, or you can talk him out of the ones that don't run, give him Win2K. Win9X needs to die already, move on.

Definitely W98 with such a small amount of ram. I would recommend at least 128MB(256 preferable) with W2K. For the love of God stay away from ME..... ME is the bane of all computer users.

I would also go with Win98SE. If you have a friend that has an OEM copy of W98SE, you could make a copy of his CD and use it legally with a license pack from such dealers as: 9Software . They also have Win2k for a great price. Or possibly Linux/BSD.

p.s. You and he should be aware of MS Word and IE severe security flaws. Use Mozilla (1.0 branch), Netscape 7, or Opera for browser and something like Abi Word or Star Office (free downloadable Word substitutes).bh.

Definately NOT win98!
Another 64 meg of ram and that machine will run 2K just FINE. I use a PIII 450 at work with 128 meg of ram and it doesn't choke, which surprised me, but it's totally fine.

almost the same specs as my parents pc. they had 64 megs of ram and i threw another 128 chip in there, pc100 sdram, really cheap. Installed Windows 2000 and it works great. I know upgrading isn't an option but 64-128 mbs of ram and windows 2000 will do wonders!
