My LG V30 yesterday ended up with a screen issue where half of the screen turned white, thus I can only use half of the screen. I had the device insurance from Verizon. While on call with the insurance people, the insurance company Asurion ended up telling me that I had the option of getting a brand new non-refurbished LG V60. I tried asking if I could get a Moto G Stylus 5G instead, however they said it was nit an option. The deductable played was $229.

I got the new device in the mail today, and on the back of the device there is a sticker that says "Refurbished by Asurion". My dad says that we could return the device if I didn't want a refurbished one and maybe get the deductable back and get the Motorola phone that I wanted. Now I am stuck with two options, keeping the refurbished phone, or sending it back to get back payment and buy the Motorola.

Which phone is better, the LG V60 or the Moto G Stylus 5G? FYI we have a 4G plan which my dad does not want to upgrade to 5G.

On the positive side the v60 is a MUCH higher end phone then the Moto G being a former "flagship" model. It will run rings around the Moto with a Qualcom 865 processor/Adreno 650 GPU and 8gb's RAM. Also the GUI will feel familiar after the v30 plus it has a VASTLY superior (and larger) OLED display vs the G's LCD.

On the negative side LG no longer makes cell-phones so warranty support may be problematic from them as well as the quality/frequency of security patch's. (LG was bad at this before they stopped making phones!) Also it's a non-factory refurb which is seldom good news while the G is brand-new.

LG v60 THINQ vs Motorola G Stylus (Phone Arena)

Not really a tough call IMO .... I would keep the v60 despite the "refurb-factor" as long as it doesn't exhibit any software issues or physical damage. Since Verizon/Assurion is the warranty-provider there's very little risk involved and it really is a nicer piece of hardware.

:)

If you have PROOF of the claim of a new, non refurbished device, I'd suggest pitching a major fit and demand the refund of the insanely high deductible.

'Twere it me, I'd likely go to the CC or other payment source and file a claim.

If you don't have PROOF ..... well .....

Holy balls I somehow missed that OP had to cough up $230 WITH a warranty! (imagine if he didn't have one?)

Considering this information, I suggest the OP see if he can get the deductible money refunded, return the LG refurb, cancel ripoff Verizon and snag a brand-new Galaxy s22 from Fi for approx $60 additional. *($299 with number transfer)

I have the stylus G model and I will never buy another brand unless Motorola starts slippin' and trippin'.

I did not know LG is out of the phone biz. I gave up those shinny cow pies last century.

I have the 2021 Stylus 5G. Just updated to android12 and the phone app quit working. Aside from that, it's been a great phone. I installed a different dialer. Anyway, that warranty sounds like bullshit. For $230, I could get a brand new phone, and not have paid monthly for the privilege. Also, I was unaware 5g cost anything extra. AFAIK your phone either supports it or not; same price.

Actually if he calls Verizon and is nice and polite I strongly suspect OP can get a far better phone then either one of these out of them ESPECIALLY for that much cash!.

Not to imply the G is a bad phone by any means but it is a mid-range phone and I wouldn't even consider it when I could have a Samsung Galaxy s22 for a mere $59 more!

Fi has the Moto Stylus 5g for $199(!!) brand-new or the Samsung A53 for $249 along with the s22 @ $299... any of these is a pretty good deal. (all of these are fully unlocked & BNIB)

The only reason why I had Moto G Stylus in mind was because of the stylus. The only other option would be the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which my dad would definitely not buy considering it to be over a thousand. At the same time... $230 is in fact less than the price it is at Amazon. The only reason why my father thought of the idea with a return to get refund and a new Moto G Stylus was because Verizon sells the stylus almost at the same price of the deductible at $300. On top of that the LG V30 that I have is like 4 years old, and with the monthly insurance price, my dad in total payed over $5K just for the insurance.

Without the stylus I would be looking at something like the Samsung A5X series.

I don't have proof.

If I had a job and it was my money being used, I would have bought a S22 Ultra ... but in New York that does come for free with the added chance of getting robbed.

Am I missing something? Amazon is selling the G for a minimum of $200. Thing is, I barely use my cell except for texting and even then, I do all of the actual texting from one of the PCs. So I'm not sure I paid that much in April of last year. This was one of my very few non-Amazon purchases so I can't look it up easily. And if I got from Republic Wireless (now Dish), there must have been some sort of discount since I don't think I would have paid that much at the time.

I don't have proof

Since it's Verizon and you guys have had their service for years I bet you they'll still hook you up if you call them and politely explain how unhappy you are and that you are considering cancelling. (you don't have to mean it!)

HOWEVER unless Verizon service is the only decent reception in your area what you NEED to do is tell them to pound sand.... I priced out their service awhile back and it was such a ripoff it was literally laughable.

Also I haven't paid more then $300 +/- for a phone since I bought my first smart phone and I'm sure as hell not getting bent right over without even "the courtesy of a reach-around" by that BS Assurion "profit-machine" insurance.

Having said all of the above, if you really MUST have a stylus the two phones you mentioned are pretty much the only options. *(the unlocked s22 Ultra is $599 @ Google Fi right now)

I have the Stylus G, but not with 5G. Paid a little over 200 at the 'Zon. Barebones OS, no bloatware that carriers usually install.

Over a year later, the battery still holds for several days if only on standby.

I never use the Stylus, didn't even know it was there at first. I use some rubber tipped things I got for a couple of bucks for 10 or 15 of them.

The only reason why we have Verizon wireless is because of the discount with FiOS, the only other TV and internet service providers are Charter Spectrum and RCN.

Just a heads up.... now I am not sure at all now. It's starting to look more expensive now to get a new phone at this point if Asurion will not accept the return of the refurbished phone and pay back the deductible.

What is known right now:

* I have the old device.
* I have a refurbished device.
* If I do not send the old device to Asurion, within 10 days, an additional charge of $75 will be posted on to my dad's card.
* Verizon seems to no longer provide trade-in/upgrade old phones anymore for lines that are still 4G. So if I buy a phone from Verizon it would be full price.
* No reason was provided as to what was the problem originally with this refurbished phone.

I will be calling Asurion tomorrow.

Remember.... be polite BUT stick to your guns! ;)

(hold out for a supervisor if you have to!)

EDIT: Only the very cheapest Verizon plan (Start Unlimited @ $35) doesn't include 5g... if you have the SECOND cheapest plan (Play More Unlimited @ $45) or higher it's part of the plan even if you don't use it.

Call will be made later today......
Lets pretend as if I went to a store and I had to choose from the following, which would be the best,
Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G
LG V60 ThinQ 5G UW
Samsung Galaxy A42 5G (128GB / 4GB RAM)
Samsung Galaxy A53 5G (128GB / 6GB RAM)

Bear in mind you may be able to add a card for more RAM. I did that on my Stylus and it seems to have merged into one large storage area.

Best is relative. LG is out cause they no longer exist. Probably because they made shitty phones. I've grown tired of samsung. They make quality hardware, but they try to reinvent the wheel with software. The software isn't bad, but it doesn't need to exist. I like my stylus, and I'd get it again, with 100% certainty if my choices were the ones you listed. BTW, I fixed the dialer app that broke on upgrade. Clearing storage fixed it.

Update. So apparently in the call the person claimed that the person I spoke with 2 days ago made a mistake when talking about how the warranty works. Apparently in the warranty contract, the people on the phone have no way to see what is in the warehouse, but can request for a new phone. If a new phone is not available a refurbished one will be sent. The person on the phone did state we can send the refurbished phone back, and get a credit of the deductable.

I am going to BestBuy today later to get the A53. I decided not on the G Stylus for a reason that feel bad for telling here, as it would make some owners of hte phone here.... feel bad and akward about their phone that they feel is not even 2 years old.

Yesterday, just for the heck of it ..... I compared the Moto G Stylus to my very first cellphone I had in 2014 ( Nokia Lumia Icon) on the website versus. What came out was interesting........ it showed that my 8 year old Nokia Lumia Icon that I never traded in.................

......................

has point score difference of 15 points (moto g stylus 55/100 rating) and (Icon 45/100), and ironically where ever the Stylus failed at was where the 8 year old Icon exceeded the Stylus.

It even stated that the Icon has a 13.95% higher pixel density. and has more image stablaization and lighting features and a wider camera apreture, although the megapixel on the stylus is higher. Even though the lumia has width resoulution dimension smaller (but same hight dimension ), the other screen features make the 8 year old lumia screen rating slightly higher than the stylus.

Yah so im getting a A53

While I don't believe your ancient Nokia is actually better then the current Moto G overall, the A53 compares favorably with the Galaxy S22 and is on another level hardware quality-wise. (especially the AMOLED display)

Pretty sure you'll be happy with your decision... I still say you should be going for the ACTUAL carrier-unlocked s22 @ $299 and switching to Google Fi but this is a FAR better choice then a used/refurb v60 or the Moto G.

My dad called Verizon first to see if they would have some discount more for the A53, than BestBuy sale of $100 of today (right now it is the same price of the regular retial price of $350 of Moto G Stylus, which to is in sale and is at $250). They did have a trade-in any phone offer, but unfortunately the highest Samsung series LG V30 only gives a credit for is the A2X series and not the A5X series. The guy at Verizon said that if we buy from Verizon it would be around $500 or $14 something per month via contract. Yup going to BestBuy now for sure.
