1 is the only game I really care about on that list.

Perhaps number 6 as well, but I doubt it.

Personally, I'd classify those as "sandbox" games rather than "open-ended". Whatever you want to call them, they're my absolute favorite genre so I'll just say most of the above.

GTA4, Prototype, Saint's Row2, and I'm interested to see this is Vegas but I'm convinced it will suck.

I'm the exact opposite. A sandbox is where you create stuff, open-ended atleast implies that you can do stuff until you get tired of it.

But anyway, GTA4 is obviously the first choice for anybody who likes this genre. Prototype has potential, though.

Mercs 2 and GTA4 are at the top of my list. I REALLY liked Mercenaries 1. It was a nice change from the GTA series in that I didn't have to do stupid shit like graffiti walls, go to the gym, pick up my girlfriend, etc... I really do like GTA, but sometimes it has too many stupidly tedious things mixed in. Mercenaries was pure destruction... with the variety of military vehicles you could get and the ability to call in airstrikes or have weaponry dropped to you via helicopter. Loved it.

I am interested to see what all the have added in the form of multiplayer in GTA4. I think that is what has me excited most about GTA4. The ability to play co-op is what I loved the most about Crackdown. That should now be a mandatory feature for this genre. BTW, I loved Crackdown, but it was sort of the opposite of GTA in that it had too few missions to do. There were basically no side quests other than collecting orbs (which was alot of fun though) and doing those races.

I'll probably rent GTA4 because of the hype but I was never a big fan of 3 or vice city.
