Which one?

Hey,
Well I am planning to get a new computer arround early next month. I usually rip DVDs to Xvid or Divx and I am currently doing it on an AMD240+. It usually takes 17-18 hours which is long compared to other people in my group that rip within 5-6 hours.
Well, I wanted to know that which one should I go for? I'm only looking for a new motherboard and processor and ofcourse RAM. The rest I have already got. I got £300 to spend on a motherboard, processor and RAM.
Should I go for a Core2Duo E6320, Core2Duo E6750(releases end of the month) or an AMD Dual-Core Processor. Any suggestions are welcome. Remember, I have only got £300 to spend on RAM, Motherboard and Processor and I want to rip quickly within 6-7 hours.

Stop thinking AMD that's the first thing.

Core 2 Duo processors are proven to be faster in this area. So you'll want to get an E6320, maybe a P965 motherboard and some decent value RAM.

Oh right thanks for the reply.
Coz I've been thinking that will E6750 be better for me or E6320. I'm glad to have a response from one of the Pro's of this forum.

yeah, intel chips have always been good at that sort of thing. i'm not really sure if that task would take advantage of a quad core processor? if it does, and if you could afford one, i would really suggest you get a q6600 when the price drops. 300 pounds is what, like $600 or something? if the prices for you are similar, it should be well within your budget as it will be $266 when it drops, which would leave you with about $330 to spend on a motherboard and RAM, which will be more than enough. you should buy RAM now, though, as prices are starting to creep back up. i would suggest you get 4GB now, but 2GB would be fine. however if/when you plan on going to a 64 bit operating system, the 4gb of ram would probably be worth it, so you'd might as well get it now since it's so cheap. even if you're using xp you'll be able to use about 3gb of it.

anyway, if a quad wouldn't help you (which, i'm almost certain it would), then just go for whatever core 2 duo will fit your bill.

so:

if a quad core would help:

get a q6600 after the price drop

if a quad wouldn't help:

get whichever core 2 duo that you can afford...after the price drop

regardless:

get 4gb of ram now, before the price hike


and for motherboard, i would personally look into a p35 board, whichever suits your needs.


oh and if you want to overclock, note you won't be able to go as high on the quad core. also if you game you'll notice the best overall performance there with a dual core (if you're willing to overclock, and if not you'll just save a lot of money by buying a dual instead of a quad). but since you do a lot of ripping and encoding etc etc, i think a quad core is really what you want/need.
