I am building a PC and i am wondering which Graphics Card i should go for. It is a choice between these two, maybe you could offer me some suggestions for alternatives to these.

That's like comparing a Porsche to a Neon. The 9600XT will spank the 5600XT around all day for fun.

Do as others have suggested and save up for the 9800Pro.

Why do you all assume that the OP is looking for a best bang for the buck gaming card? And why didn't the OP describe his/her needs more?

I know, it gets old quick doesn't it? I had a 9800P, it was nice but it wasn't all that. I'm on a 9600XT right now and my gaming experience isn't all that different.

try increasing your resolution above 800x600.

lol j/k...but seriously...why spend $150 on a 9600XT when you could spend a few bucks more and get something that's much better? the 9800p is getting repeatedly suggested because it's the best card to buy right now...assuming you have $200. and if you don't have $200, don't buy anything yet.

buying a 9600xt is a waste of $150 imo...unless you absolutely have to have something RIGHT NOW and you won't get another $50 for at least a few months. it's just not good price/performance. i'm not a freakin robot at all. if you read the benchmarks, articles, and other posts, you might easily come to the same conclusion.

i mean...allstarshop's $225 retail 9800p with a hl2 coupon...that can't really be beat right now. i guess you'll get the hl2 coupon with the 9600xt too, but what the hell...spend the extra $$ and get a real card...

don't mean to offend, but c'mon...the 9600xt just isn't going to be all that great for hl2/doom3/STALKER....let alone the cards that come next. i guess it will be an OK deal if you're considering upgrading to PCI-E as soon as it comes out...but that's the only situation i can think of off the top of my head where a 9600 series card makes any sense

How about the X800 and GF 6800 cards? Even in AGP format they're smoking the 9800 and GF FX cards. I ditched my 9800P while there was still cash value in it in preparation for a NEW new video card.

Sorry but the 9800P is a big yawn now. Speaking from experience.

AND once again it is assumed that the guy is looking for a gaming card. Perhaps he is but until he says so the "save and get a 9800P" responses are just pavlovian responses. I mean, c'mon, if he is not gaming, is the extra $50 worth it? I don't think so and I'm not going to offer advice until I know more about what the card is needed to do.

ps - I apologize if that response sounded rude to anyone. It's Friday for me. :)

Be careful about which 9800 you get. Some of the cheaper ones are coming with 128bit memory buses and are not very fast for the money. And then there are some 9800SEs that are soft moddable into full 9800 Pro cards, they are an awesome deal. :)

So I take it you wanted a gaming card all along? Did you consider a GF FX 5900XT? They are also fabulous cards for the price.

Because the X800P is more than double the price of a 9800P right now, and the 6800s are no where to be seen.

The 9800p is the best bang for your buck card that you can get right now, provided you want to do some gaming. If he's not interested in gaming, than he should not be looking at a 9600 XT either, rather something like a Radeon 9000/9200 or a GF4 MX or buy a mobo with a solid IGP.

In what sense? It offers excellent performance, far greater than any other sub $200 card.

I guess it does get annoying how everybody and their grandmother has one of them though. Blame Nvidia for making pisspoor products.

In case you failed to read one of my above posts, I DID have one.

I don't have it anymore. For me it WAS a yawn. And I could care less if everyone and their grandma has one. The new cards are where the excitement is now.

The new cards are where the excitement is right now, but $150-200 doesn't buy you a ticket to ride that train... So, regardless of the the fact that you used to own a 9800 Pro and now own a 9600, the 9800 pro is still the best bang for the buck right now. Exciting or not, that's the way it is, so don't rip on people for recommending the best possible solution for the given circumstances.

The 5600XT is horrible. If you want more comparable caqrd then get the 5700. But i would highly recommend a 9800Pro or a 5900XT. MUCH MUCH MUCH better. Just for the book... the 5600XT is worse in EVERYTHING- no matter what- than the 9600XT.

Actually it's more like comparing a Neon SRT-4 to a base Neon. Neither of them are great, but at least one goes a little faster.

The x800 and 6800 have nothing to do with this post. They're not even close to applicable. If he didn't play games, he could get a 5200 or 9200. The 9800 is the best deal going right now.

Worst case save a wee bit and get a 9800 non-pro. It'll still whoop anything lesser than a 9700 Pro (about even to it).
FX 5900XT, R 9800, R 9800Pro (best bang/buck at the moment in asending order)
