My brother has got a good offer on a computer from his work. The price is the same, as are most of the components, but CPU, GPU (and mobo ofc) differ.

Both are Dells of some sort. Bave 1 gb RAM, 160 gb HDD, DVD burner and comes with a 19" LCD.

One has
Ahtlon 5000 X2
Radeon X1300 Pro

The other has
Core 2 Duo E6300 1,83 Ghz
Gforce 7900 GS

Which one is best? I lean towards the Core 2 Duo.

Thx for any replies.

The Athlon 5000X2 is a bit faster then the e6300 (both at stock speeds) but, not enough to be relevant IMHO. Keep in mind also that the Dell motherboards will not support overclocking. However, the 7900GS is a much faster video card than the X1300pro. If he's into gaming then go with the Core2Duo/7900GS config hands down.

If it were me, I would get the core2duo rig because it has a much better video card.

The X2 5000+ would actually be slightly faster on average, but the 7900 GS pwns the X1300 Pro, so yeah, go that route.

if your brother plays any games, go with the c2d system... the x1300 is an entry level video card and NOT for gaming, while the 7900gs is more mid-range and will let you game. at stock speeds, the x2 5000 will be faster than the E6300, so if he won't OC and does more CPU-intensive tasks, go with the AMD system. finally, if he will OC (which may require a diff mobo than the one dell provides), the E6300 can attain some very impressive results and is definitely the way to go.
