Which one? Lithium Ion or Ni-Mh battery for a laptop

I'm trying to choose between those two types of batteries for my laptop and I'm not sure which kind holds more charge and is generally better. Can someone please enlighten me? 🙂

Just look at laptop specs. Cheap machines use Ni, expensive models use Lithium.

Lithium also has less memory effect problems.

Lithium Ion batteries are far better than Nickel Metal Hydride.

Li-Ions last approximately twice as long as Ni-MH, they nearly double the time you can have your laptop on for the same charge; they are much lighter....usually less than half of what the same size Ni-MH weighs, and they are less subject to the "memory-effect". You do not need to fully discharge a Li-Ion battery before you charge it up again.

Yes, Li-Ion batteries are more expensive, but they are definitely worth the extra cost.....one Li-Ion is almost like 2 Ni-MH batteries.....which one is more expensive now?

Go for Lithium-Ion or Lithium-Polymer(Very new.) if they're available, as they're infinatly superior to Nickel Metal Hydrate batteries. With NiMH batteries, you have to make sure that the batteries are completely discharged before you start to re-charge them as it will "remember" the point where you started re-charging as being the maximum charge point. For example, if you had a NiMH battery that ran for 100 Minutes, and started re-charging it with 10 minutes still remaining, if will never hold more than 90 minutes charge.

What laptop do you have ?
I thought battery type was specific to each machine and that you couldn't choose just any type of battery for a laptop.

Yes, but most laptops now support Lithium Ion and NIMH.

Lithium Ion is by far the best. Where did you hear that NIMH batteries have a "memory" problem. That was a problem with some NICD batteries. It is NOT a problem with NIMH.

Ni-MH batteries are subject to the memory problem, but less so than NiCDs. Trust me....i killed about 3 Ni-MH batteries on my laptop doing that.

NiMH batteries can be reconditioned, LiIon cannot. LiIon are still prone to the memory problem, however to a much lesser extent.

To avoid the foremost cause of memory problem - do not have the battery in the machine if it's charged and the laptop is running on AC for a long time.
