This one is easy,HL2 is better IMHO.

Throw graphics out of the window for a second and just look into the classic elements of gaming which`s "gameplay" ,Doom3 was disappointing and did not live up to expectations,HL2 on the other hand was fun and enjoyable ,oh as for Steam installation, I found HL2 painless and very easy to setup.

Bottom line,gameplay will always win over graphics where my gaming is concerned.

Better game: HL2. Better engine: Doom3.

I look forward to the Doom3 EXP pack and hopefully downloadable content from Steam for HL2.

like said so many times before, doom3 is simply ... bad.... very very bad game, it looks good, creeps you out but thats it, its simply not fun

hl2 had the story line, had the characters, had the gameplay, just about everything, it could have been better though but it was still a very good game

Hl2 = 8.8/10
Doom3 = 1.5/10

anyone who says they weren't impressed by HL2's graphics either has a crappy video card or have the game configured improperly..it's amazing....

Doom 3 looks great, albeit too dark - and yes, I understand the atmosphere it's trying to create, and it succeeded, but it's still too dark...the multiplayer aspect of D3 is bad....could be fun for just 1 on 1's and 2 on 2's, but I prefer higher numbers in my multiplayer FPS games...like others have said, I look forward to other games on this engine - Quake 4 and I'm guessing the next COD game?

HL2, to me, is the best game of it's kind ever made - and although I liked the first one, I thought this was much better.

My setup is a p4@3ghz, 1gb ram, x800 vid card, and a 1600x1050 Dell 2005fpw - a resolution that HL2 runs out of the box, and looks amazing in.

Far Cry is up there in terms of graphic quality - and Painkiller, with the ep/patch, looks very impressive as well, in fact, I'd say both games are better than Doom 3, but not quite as pretty...

I prefer the HL2 world created with the Doom 3 engine. I think it was posted here some time ago. Someone created a HL2 map with the Doom 3 engine and I though the shading and color was much better. Doom characters look horrible but I think the HL2 maps and textures could be much better. HL2 is the better choice I think.

Have you finished HL2 yet? I am not trying to spoil anything but really the story is nonexistent. There certainly are very interesting things going on but no plot is ever developed.

i never played hl, iv allways played the quake and doom series. between hl2 and d3, hl2 is the better game by far. d3 is so repetivive. im still playing hl2 and everytime i run into something new. hl2 playing 10 times better on my machines helps make it more enjoyable too. i only got a 9800pro and a p4 3.0 and doom3 plays like crap on anything above 800x600. i know i gotta upgrade when q4 comes out :)

Here's the link. Now they have a video of the level and its looks pretty impressive. Doom3's engine is a lot more capable than Source and in a year it'll show too, but we all know how much gamers actually care about all the eye candy if the gameplay sucks. It will be interesting to see what gets done with these two engines this year.

The Physics engine is so realistic because the programmer at valve accidentally put Einstin's grand unifed theroy in the source code. The entire physics engine is in 4 lines of code

Don't forget the latest Unreal incarnation in Thief - Deasly Shadows

Thief Deadly Shadows is based off of the Duex Ex 2 engine.

Both DeuSex II and Thief - DS use the Unreal (II) engine.

I agree with BenSkywalker, both games were disapointments.
I didn't particularly enjoy playing through either of them, had to drag myself along, though I the end, I prefer Doom iii, because at least it had some kind of ending, while Half Life 2 didn't.

As for graphics, HL2 made the most of old tricks, while Doom iii made the most of the available hardware.
Doom iii was too dark to really show it off though, but I think it's clearly superior.

I've posted my thoughts many times in the past, what's once more?

Anyone who thinks these games are both 'dissapointments' probably bought too much into the hype machine. Doom 3 being the worst culprit here promised the world, the ability to have sex with you, and it was even supposed to pay your mortgage, but it didnt and therefore it was a dissapointment.

For Half Life 2, people decided that Gabe Newell was an ass for not releasing it in 2003 when he said he was going to, Steam gave people problems, and it's still "just another first person shooter", therefore it's a dissapointment.

Personally I love both games.

Half Life 2 a smidge more than Doom 3 due to the ability to really adapt to many system types and play well on them, but the games are two differnet beasts. HL2 is mostly a run and gun while D3 is an aureal and visual horror 'movie'. The only thing they have in common really is that they're FPSes... Vampire Bloodlines is based on the Source engine and is a "FPS" with role playing, so why not throw that into the comparison? Probably because it blurs the line even more as what an FPS really is.

The industry has moved on from what an FPS truly is. FPS is now simply a vehicle of delivery for different genres, the most popular being hardcore action.

The funny thing is, before Doom3 was released it was considered one of the least hyped games. The only information that was ever released about it was small E3 videos and the time honored tradition of "when its done". Id software was very tight lipped about the game.

The hype of Doom3 came from the community. The expectation of greatness from Carmack and the fond memories of Doom1/Doom2.
