Help,

Need someone to help me in making a decision, I am currently on AT&T with a Blackberry 9700, thats giving me all sorts of problems and want to switch to either the Motorola Droid X or the New Apple I-PHone 4- I have already looked at the In depth reviews for both phones on Anandtech, but was hopeful to find some folks that have hands on experience with the IP4 and the Droid X-
I am hopeful that once FROYO 2.2 is out, Anandtech will do a blow for blow comparison between the 2 phones.
I have seen both phones, Its hard to decide, one of the "Turn Offs" is Steve Jobs and the Death Grip Restrictions they have with the IPhone, No Flash, Jobs has got a "Burr up his butt against Adobe" so what do you do? you punish all the I Phone Users, No Flash-
Both Phones are absolutely Breathtaking, Gorgeous and state of the art- AT&T is very difficult to deal with, actually Miserable is a more suitable word. If you run Coverage Maps my zip is 43209 in Columbus Ohio you'll see, according to the maps there should not be any problems... what do I have to say to the maps? Bah...What a bunch of Hooey-
Who knows, Maybe Anand will see this post and step in and help guide me.
A good example: the Verizon Sales Person was telling me that with the Droid X you can get Navigation, Turn By Turn thats Razor Accurate and for free! With Apple the only thing free is "Headache"-
Another- I was told that with the Droid X, the phone can be "Unlocked" with a call to the vendor through your provider at no charge- with Apple, if you unlock your IPhone you get threats from Apple-
I have heard that if you have problems with a phone, Verizon is friendly to deal with, Not so at AT&T, more like your dealing with Gansters.
Any help or Guidance would be appreciated, also can the Droid X be used in Europe or the Middle East (Israel)-
I added this based on one of the Comments made regarding screen size- There both Large Screens, while the Retina Display of the IP4 would make anyone "Melt" the Droix X Display is also Gorgeous to say the least- I recently had eye surgery, I had my Cataracts repaired, im seeing 20/15, 20/10 uncorrected, the displays are absolutely breathtaking on both. I think my criteria is I want a Fast, Stable Smart Phone, not a Flaky Phone, like my Blackberry 9700, (not throwing darts at BB), I think its the network and thats its tweaked for Apple as a primary consideration in front of all the other phones they deal with)

Thank you,

It comes down to screen sizes then? 3.5" vs 4.3" is a huge difference. What's your preference?

Thank you,

1st bold : Not sure what you are asking here. I don't think Verizon unlocks your phone with a phone call.

2ns Bold: Usually, international cell carriers tend to be GSM based, the Droid X and all Verizon phones now are CDMA based.

Your post is full of praises for the Droid X so why are you asking for our opinions for both phones again ??

Neither the DroidX nor the iPhone 4 can be unlocked to be used in either Europe or the Middle East. The DroidX is a CDMA phone and Verizon doesn't tend to unlock their phones, and iPhones in the US are locked to AT&T - although you can get unlocked versions in parts of Europe, and Canada.

Neither the DroidX nor the iPhone4 are flaky phones, and they are both fast. It sounds like you want a DroidX - you don't like Apple much, you aren't happy with AT&T's coverage where you are. I would advise going to a Verizon store and spending some time with a DroidX and then playing with an iPhone 4 at an Apple Store, and then making a decision. But to me, it sounds like you already know what you want.

The Sales People at the Apple Store and Verizon tell you all sorts of things to make a sale- "Hook them and Cook them" I have indeed gone and played with both phones, I was looking for a Consumer that may have had similar experience, and was will to share that experience thats all.... Im sorry if I did something wrong, it was not meant to offend anyone.

I want to make a Solid Purchase that will work out correctly for me. With Regards to AT&T's coverage, according to the maps, I couldnt ask for anything better- It appears or so my friends tell me that part of the reason my Blackberry is having trouble is because of the Bandwiith issue the IPhones and I Pads are causing on AT&T, they also give Priority to Network tuning to Apple Products above the other products.
Thank you-

I've had both Verizon and att in columbus. In my opinion, att had better voice quality. This was with an iphone 3G (att) vs. enV (verizon)

I can believe that, My son has a I-Phone 3GS32 and has had absolutely no coverage issues! We live at the same residence and work for the same Company!

I wouldn't suggest talking to the salespeople much.... just sit down and mess with the phone. At Apple, it's usually hard even finding someone to help you, so you don't have to worry about being hooked or cooked. At Verizon, tell them you just want to see it in person but that you aren't buying for a while - that's usually enough to get them to leave you alone.

It's going to be really hard to find someone who has extensive hands-on experience with both phones because they are both new, and most people are under contract anyway. So then you end up with people have had experience with one or the other or neither telling you whichever one they tend to favor - and on this particular forum, most people favor Androids and thus the DroidX.

I honestly think that both are very nice phones - pretty much you summed up what I would say in your post. I think the iPhone has an edge in terms of apps - not just quantity but I tend to think iPhone apps tend to be better and I think it's better as a music player - but the DroidX has several hardware advantages, the software is more customizable, and the built-in apps are better, and I think Verizon's network is generally better... although specifically where you are, I wouldn't know.

Still, I think you shoud go into a store and try doing the things you want to do on the phone. In my experience people end up favoring one or the other after they'd spent some time messing with them. Pull up webpages, pretend to type an email, check the weather, look at the navigation apps, check out the music player... whatever you think you want to do.

Either one is a fine phone, both have their strong points and limitations, should you choose either phone you'll be happy.

Back on the subject of AT&T favoring packets from iPhones... I don't think that I believe this. First off, because I have an iPhone 3GS and I had lots of problems with dropped calls for 3-4 months and when I'm dropped 10+ times in one day, I didn't at all tend to feel like I was a favored customer.

Beyond that, more practically if they were caught in this sort of non-iPhone network sabbatage it would be horrible PR. It would be a disasterous nightmare for them. And it would be a very hard secret to keep when you think of all of the engineers and people involved at AT&T - it's not like the CEO could tell one guy to implement this... it would be a big effort... and eventually it would leak out and it would turn into a huge fiasco.

I really doubt that AT&T favors iPhone with fewer dropped calls by reducing the quality for non-iPhone users. I would guess that the cell tower near where you make most of your calls is more slammed or more flaky than the tower of your friends and so it just seems that way.

I'm always a big fan of Hanlon's Razor:

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity or imcompetence."

In this case, I think it's incompetence. :)

As a DROID owner I will be buying the iPod next Tuesday. I'm sick and tired of shit apps for my phone. No games worth purchasing... blah blah. I think I've gotten my phone to where I like it. There obviously would be very limited customization with the iPhone so I'm glad I have that. But I feel to have the balance of customizability and basic usability, I need both :D

Maybe you should buy a DS if you want a mobile device for gaming? There are plenty of decent games for Android that don't require you to pay, AstroCommander, andBattleship, HamsterClimb, Toss-It, etc. And that doesn't begin to touch the multitude of free casual 'time waster' games.

To the OP, remove your email address from your post. You're going to get spammed badly if you leave it.

As you pointed out, the iphone has serious problems with dropped calls related to its faulty antenna design, made worse by AT&T's coverage. If you want to make calls, than the Droid X is the better option. However, I am not a big fan of MotoBlur, the UI overlay on the Droid X. Even with root access and running a different launcher, that crap cannot be fully removed. If you want wait a bit longer, I would check out Verizon's Galaxy S flavor, the Fascinate. It runs Samsung's Touchwiz UI overlay, worst UI on the planet, but it can be completely removed with root access and the impending release of Cyanogenmod for the Galaxy S. Engadget stated in their review of the Galaxy S that 10 minutes with Touchwiz made them want to punch Samsung's UI designers in the face. :p

If you can wait, the Droid Pro comes out for the holidays and will feature either a 2Ghz processor or dual core processor at a lower clock, and will have a front facing came as well as other things.

I have not seen the ip4 but I held my friends ip3 and it was nice. iPhone users say facebook is better on the iPhone. But the "deathgrip" could be a big con. I was talking to my uncle who lives in vegas and I couldn't carry on a conversation with him. He broke up 3 times to where I lost track of the conversation. That was just one call. Later that day, my mother said she was talking to him and it dropped twice.

Froyo is not out yet for the DX and probably won't be for another month. My DX is my first experience with Android. I miss a few things from my BB Storm1 but the screen is very nice. Insurance on that phone is 7.99 a month. Do not use Verizon's VZ navigator, they charge for it, use the google navigator. And if you want to use Facebook, use the "touch facebook" login pg. It's alot better than the Android FB app.

My brother bought himself a Microcell cus of AT&T's crappy reception.

Droid Pro looks like it's just a Droid 2 with extra GSM capability. So, it could work internationally.

Wrong. The unlock for the new iPhone has been out for several weeks now. You can unlock any iPhone 4 that hasn't been updated to 4.0.2 (unless you backed up your SHSH blobs to revert back to 4.0.1) to work on any GSM network in the entire world.

The Droid X on the other hand is irrelevant since those countries don't use CDMA

Yep, I have a 3G unlocked on 4.0.1

I also just set it up to work with my iPad sim, it's a magical mini iPad now :)
