I want to ask for a favor from you guys here, would really appreciate you for any info and help:
Setting up a new box for some fast number crunching job. Already got:
425W PSU
EP-8K7A+
Crucial PC2100 DDR
Alpha 8045 HS w/ 40CFM Fan
WD 1000BB
Love to squeeze the last MHz from a chip.

Pondering which CPU I should pick?
Seems Tbird 1400 requires no trick for OC; while XP 1600+ needs quite some
steady handwork.
Which offers better OC'ing in terms of raw MHz that could be gained (no PR numbers pls)?

Thanks

I would say that just going on the core, the new XP could be OC'd more.

Because the T-Bird is almost dead at 1.4 anyway (yes, I know I'm a sceptic ;)) there is more margin for increased speeds with the XP, as its core goes up to the 2000+ as we have seen.

As for which chip would get the most overclock in terms of MHz? Well, you might get the same increase out of them, but overall the 1600+ would still be faster.

I went with the 1600XP chip, it offers more enhancements than the 1.4, plus coupled with the DDR memory it rocks! You only need to do one more step to close the bridges than you have to do with the 1.4, here's a Link to a site that has found an easy way to do it. ( I've come across a better site, can't find it right now, sorry )

Thanks alot, Migroo and Rusty Nale!

I am wondering that unlock the clock multiplier may not be as desired
since EP-8K7A+ doesn;t seem to provide multiplier DIP or jumper or
BIOS tweak util? I looked it up last time when I testing the board. But
i could have missed sth.

I'd love to check out the new method for unlocking work. I read the guide
from THG, that could be rather messy with my shaking hands

I have both (the one dead though, but not because of oc'ing) and my XP1600+ is way better.
My old 1,4 T-Bird C would only do 1533 stable, granted that was with a DragonOrb3 7000rpm hsf and now I use a PAL8045, but it's still nothing compared to my 1600+: 1680mhz, and that's just upping the fsb (160x10,5).
Didn't bother to unlock it since I wanted a high fsb and my mobo (MSI K7T Pro2 RU) can "only" do 164mhz so I hoped that I wouldn't need to lower the multiplier to oc the fsb high and I was right.
Granted, I have a good hsf with a good fan (Papst 46,5cfm), but it's still amazing. I've newer heard of any people going that much beyond 1600mhz though, but 1600 is quite possible where most 1,4 T-Birds seemed to max at 1533.

Thanks alot for the information, Egrimm and WIZEguy!

Egrimm, You said it all. I will go with a XP 1600+ chip. Since I don't have a as powerful fan as you got,
I will be expecting 1600MHz as my OC goal. Also want it to be abit quieter.

Guess I will stay with Epox 8K7A+, i'd rather go with a 1800+ if I had 80+$ extra:eek:

i can bet on it that the xp will offer better overclocking... do to lower voltage requirement, you can push it just that little bit harder. also, the xp is a more mature core then the t'bird - a little more refined, more head room.

If you are planning on purchasing a new CPU, go with retail. These Tbird will burn out instantly in case of HSF failure or due to random issues. I've gone thru 4 different CPUs in 2 weeks and I would say 1600XP and 1.4 AYJHA o/c about the same. If you go with retail, take 1.4 AYJHA, as they come already unlocked and you can RMA it in case you blow the chip. 1600XP unlocking mod will void your warranty and if you don't unlock it, it'll max out at your FSB.
BTW, 1.4 AYJHA oc/ed to 1620mhz@1.85V
1600XP maxed at 10.5x143mhz

I burnt one 1.33 AYHJA and 1.4 AYHJA (1.33 was past the OEM warranty, 1.4 got lost in the mail and I am out of 200+)

Thanks alot, Spikegifted and PUN!

While I am glad to hear some different opinions, yet choices, choices...
likely I may get over 15% from a XP, but may be 10% from a Tbird if i a lucky...

Nice job to get 1.4 AYJHA oc/ed to 1620mhz@1.85V. What board you are using for that one?

How did the two Tbird's get caught in fire? Just because of Fan failure? I'd imagine the fallen-off
HSF would do it...
Have seen those articles on THG for overheating protection tests, quite scary stuff too.

Most 1.4 AYHJA will do at least 1.6G
I've seen it hit that mark with Retail stock cooling
I used Watercooling on those cpus btw....one died when I forgot to turn on the pump. The other just died due to extreme overclocking i guess.
Look at my sig for my rig. I use IwillKK266-R. I know Epox 8K7A will performs very well
If you are going for OEM and save some $, take the 1600+

I don't totally agree with you Pun (let's start a discussion!), it's not true that most 1,4 AYHJA T-Birds will do 1,6ghz. My wouldn't and while the DragonOrb3 isn't the best hsf it's definitely better than the stock cooling.
A while back (july, august and september i think) there was much discussion on that subject in this forum, and the general consensus was that 1,533 was the most likely oc for them, anythng above and you were lucky or using super-cooling (=water or better).
The reason you get so good results may be due to that, but looking at the forum you linked to there's a lot of people getting that result there. However, there isn't that many posts, here on Anandtech there were like thrice or more posts which is the reason that I belive that more.
I'm not saying this because I don't believe you, it's just that I don't want anybody to be mad at us because he didn't get the results that was "promised" (I'm being generic, not talking about anybody specific).
