Which of these Ultimate Systems would you keep?

Right now in my office I have the choice of:

Athlon FX-53
2G 433 OCZ Memory
X800XT Graphics Card
Raptor 10K 75 G HD
Abit AV8 Board

OR

Dell XPS Gen 3
3.6 G
2G DDR2X800 XT PCI Card
Raptor 10K 75G HD
925 Intel Board

Which would you keep and why?

FX-53 absolutely no question. FX-53 beats out the P4 in both gaming and office performance hands down. The only advantage the P4 has is with media encoding and even that is pretty marginal.

I got the Dell for $2550 shipped. Right now on their site the system is $3.5 +

There is no way to get a DDR2 system for $2.5K w/ the same components as the Dell.

I'd rather have the fx if it was given to me, but I do tons of video editing (plug = www.v2d.us) so if I where buying I'd likely build a similar p4 system to the dell with bigger hard drives added for storage.

5% is a pretty decent estimate considering equally configured FX and P4 systems. SOME tests put the FX around a 10% margin but 5 is closer. I wouldn't look at the systems in terms of newer technology. Look at real world performance.... The P4 system, even with DDR2 and PCI Express is outperformed by the FX system with DDR1 and regular PCI ports. True that this may change sometime in the future, but for now, the FX is king no question. Given the choice between P4 and FX, you would have to be silly not to choose the FX....unless you were a maniacal Intel fan. That and Athlon64's 64-bit performance is slowly coming to light with articles such as anandtech's linux 64 bit comparison... there really is a noticeable difference in many apps and some games. When Win XP 64bit comes out and after it's optimized, you'll be glad you got the FX system cause it'll scream past the P4. My 2 cents.

actually, tahts not true anymore. with socket 939 out and the new motherboards, amd clearly beats pentium in media encoding now. amd actually beats intel in EVERY benchmark now. check out this from anandtech's recent article. i made a post about it a few days ago in the general category.
