What programs out there use HT? Also a good overclock will fix the lower clock speeds of the i5.
I can't blame you for wanting to go with a 920 but I don't see a need for 860. I'm not even sure of what programs use HT. I'm happy with my i7 setup but if I had to redo a build right now I would go with a i5, a low end mobo, a good heatsink, 2X2gb ddr3 ram(triple channel isn't needed yet and you save a little with dual), and overclock the piss out of the cpu, and throw in a 5850 and overclock it as well. That would give you some bang for your buck.

Well let me have it. I'm pretty basic with my rigs. I just surf the net and play the occasional game I just don't like to wait for my computer so thats why I get top shelf stuff.

Anything thats optimized for multi thread will benefit from HT.

The HT on the i7 is about 50% slower then the real cores, which translates to more work done.

so where would it benefit in a game u say?
How about supreme commander 2?

I pretty much guarantee that will utilize it.
What about having a ton of programs running in the background?

I usually always have PCAnwhere + AV + FireFox x 10... and i can go straight to a game in windowed mode without closing anything and still not lag.

Encoding it helps.

I have the no BS rule when i get my computers.
What that means is i dont want any BS LAG with ANY kind of program i throw at it. :p
@ 4.4ghz /w HT ON, there isnt much out there that would possibly make my system lag.

I'm having the same issue. Do I get

A. I7 920 $200 Foxconn X58 $160 Memory (No Brand yet) 6gb $150

B. I7 860 $220 Asus P55 Pro $160 Memory (No Brand yet) 4gb $100

I run everything stock and no overclocking and its for gaming and internet and some burning media.

Definitely the i7 860 if you are not overclocking.

I think B minus the 5870 since I already have that, and I'd go with corsair dominator 4 gb for $120

zod96 if you are not going to be overclocking and are not utilizing CF, why are you pairing a $220 Asus board when a $110-$140 board will do?

There are also $170 boards that will even do CF and SLI. Those $220 boards are really intended for maximum overclocking.

If you're going with the 1156 i7 then I'd just go i5. I don't think the price difference in mobo and ram is going to cost you if you overclock it. The i5's are the best value and can crank over 4ghz, they rule in my opinion. But you might as well go 920 if you're going i7 and really do some damage. With the amount I'm saving on CPU and Mobo I'm getting a 5850 as someone else suggested. They're very small and dx11 capable. They blow the GT285's out of the water.
