There's no way in this lifetime that my parents would spend $109 for a cell phone...
I can barely convince them to get a new one let alone pay for one...

I'm a fan of LG products, but you really should just try the phones out in a store first to see if you like the menu structure/style of the phone

Well, you should've specified your budget then. Among the "free" phones, I would recommend the Motorola V220 -- my friend has it and it's quite hardy.

Out of the free ones,

V220>X427>V180>LG1400>T237. The V220 is probably about the best you're gonna get if you're settling for free.
 
Me and my parents just upgraded our phones and just got the free V220s and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Of course, I don't really care about any special features, just that it can make calls, but it looks to be pretty nice overall.
