ok all. The first thread had a pretty dominant response. Hopefully the results in this poll will be more evenly divided.
 
*Applied Statistician (Insurance / Banking)
*Petroleum Engineer (for Med school or for taking advantage of high oil prices)
*Computer Science (to ride the tech bubble of the day, currently social networking and soon to be App developer for smart phones)

Combine any of the above with a law degree if you have no soul for extra cash.
 
Best as in what? Very vague thread.

Best job prospective that sounds the most fun to me is Law enforcement and evidence processing. Work federal or local w/ government. Cases are always different and you don't have the same mystery every time.

Best job for important world overlooks is Agriculture and food sciences. We will be running out of food in the later years, and with it being an important part of life, it is in high demand. Monsanto is always hiring biochemists.

Marine biology / aquaculture is small but growing, and has its own perks since seafood supply is growing scarce.

Veterinary technician, technologists, veterinarians are growing due to increasing amount of people getting pets and paying for their health care.
 
It's always a crapshoot. Automation, outsourcing, politics, war, or an act of God can make any or all of them not viable for a time.

Pick one you are interested in, preferably have a talent for, and apply yourself and you should be fine.
 
Poll responses are a bit bias. Engineering is a good profession, stable income, but not much potential for higher end income like the medical profession would.

Very few engineers making $250k+.
 
this thread sounds like a /sci/ thread.

Divide the fields in:
god tier
good tier
bad tier
shit tier

with all the engineers and scientists hating on the business guys.
 
Health care.

Obviously if you can rise to its top and get an MD you will not have to worry about work again, no matter how many strides are made in outsourcing in our lifetime.
 
Why not more votes for IT?

Also, wtf health care? Sure, there are a lot of jobs available, but I can't imagine those jobs paying that well unless you're an MD. I can't imagine the average nurse or making more that the average IT person.

health care workers are in demand. easy to find employment.

are you trying to figure out what to be? it sounds like you are an IT guy even though you are putting up these polls.

Yeah, health care workers are in demand, but those aren't necessarily good-paying jobs unless you are an MD.

Yes, I'm an IT person. No, I'm not going to base my entire life off an internet poll. I just want to see what people's opinions are.
 
Out of the list, I would have to put Information Technology at the very bottom of the list. Technology changes so fast, that its difficult to keep up, and what you learn right now can become outdated in a couple of years.

Law, I would have to put it on the bottom of the list as well, just above IT. In the past few decades so many people have gone to law school that the markets are flooded.

Right now medical is going to be in high demand because of the baby boomer retiring.

Good quality engineers will always be in high demand

Putting IT at the bottom of the list? Below law? LOL! The national unemployment rate for IT professionals is 1%. Compare that to the 12% unemployment of Law School graduates. Also, note this:

Law school is a “scam,” the blogger wrote. Administrators are greedy “charlatans” who could not care less about education, and students are but “hapless lemmings” who have been tricked into paying a fortune to enter “America’s most overrated, miserable and saturated industry.”

Is this what you mean by best? Which field has better present job prospects?

While I agree with you about law, I'm in IT and would love to get out and find something new. I just don't find it rewarding.
