Anyone knows how it's in Philadelphia, PA? I *might* have a job offer there, but I am not sure how the people, weather, city-life, and overall "feel." I have lived in Seattle all my life, and just have recently graduated.

I have a couple of friends who went to Philly for school but moved back to Seattle after 4 years. Found the town itneresting but didnt like a lot of the people.

so I'm bored of my city. I want to make a move when I get a new job and target these cities

I'm leaning towards L.A./Southern Cali area because of the weather and I can drive my car around. It's so relaxing and comfortable there... unlike the hustle and bustle style of NYC. I'm very serious about this move and plan to stay there for at least a few years.

My industry is high-tech/IT but with big interest in finance as well if this affects anything
And my family members are mostly located on the East coast

if possible, can you post the reason why you voted for that city?

LA might not be a bad choice, but consider the rest of the west. SF, Sacramento, Seattle, Portland, LV, Phoenix, hell, even Denver. Salt Lake might be out if you can't stomach the whole mormon mecca thing. There are a lot of smaller cities I'm leaving out too. Spokane WA, Bend OR, Reno NV, Boise ID, St. George UT, Tuscon AZ....

LV, Salt Lake, and Spokane all blow chunks.

Of course, IMHO the only reason to be in the desert is to get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful night sky and empty daytime panoramas.

Desert cities don't make any sense to me.

Clearly you've never lived in a desert city then. Granted, it's gotten overcrowded now, but LV was a really pleasant place to grow up (I spent my teen years there).

LV also has all the freebies and cheap shit given out by casinos. great place to be.

i live next to NYC and have been to the cities/areas listed in the poll. besides NYC, i already know the only other city i 100% want to live in in SF

if money were no object (ie: if I could live comfortably middle class in any city), San Francisco.

I could probably have a job in the bay area tomorrow morning if I wanted to and asked the powers that be at work for a transfer, but I can't see living comfortably in san fran on my current 50K salary.

I agree.

My stepdad lives there. His rent is $2000+/mo for a nice 2 bedroom apt, so he pays most likely over $25k/yr in rent alone....

Awesome city, but living there is expensive as hell. My rankings would go:

SF
SoCal
NYC

Boston

I loved the weather and atmosphere in San Francisco... but I was only there for a few days as a tourist.

My vote would be for SF. Lots to do here. Weather is beautiful and so are the surroundings. You can ski a few hours drive away or just laze at the beach nearby. You could go to Napa for wine tasting or to Muir woods for some hiking among the great redwoods. And that's just a drop in the bucket since there's everything for everyone here.
The tech industry is here as well as a decent financial center. I think you'd probably like it here.

what part of SD did you settle into CZroe?

I've at the minimum, visited all the American cities on the OP's list, and worked a lot in SF. You'd have to give me a LOT of money to get me to live in San Fran or greater Los Angeles. Too many people, too crowded. You couldn't pay me to live in either Chicago or Noo Yawk. Both are great vacation destinations, but I'd hate to live in either one. Too humid, (also a negative factor for most of the south) the cold winters, very high crime rates, high costs of living.

The bay area has some beautiful scenery and lots to do, but it's way too crowded, way to expensive, ad has way too much crime to suit me.

There are parts of So Cal that I wouldn't mind living in, but they're OMG expensive. (San Diego all the way north to San Clemente, then north of LA in places like Santa Barbara)

I live in one of the "enema insertion points" of Kahleeforneeya, but by comparison to any of the cities listed, it's affordable here. Too dammed hot in the summer, cold, rainy (most years) and foggy in the winter, and in t nation's top 5 for car thefts  but surprisingly, one of the better "quality of life" places we've lived.

I would move to San Fran if I could afford it and it seems like a good fit for you.

Also check out DC area, best place in the US for 20-34yr old singles and more tech/financial than you can shake a stick at. Pretty crowded though, but not like the hustle and bustle of NYC. 😉

If you want to drive your car around, S. Cali is the wrong place to go!

San Francisco, nice people, decent weather, and a tonne of great restaurants, plus a lot of other things there or nearby that I like.

Can I have your salary? I could sure as hell live comfortably here on that. 😉

Um 50k is San Francisco is like poverty lol. I grew up in the Bay Area but now live in Kansas City and make 50k here. For here 50k is not bad, but 50k in San Fran. No way.

I've lived in Sacramento, Seattle, and Chicago. I have family in SF, and have visited San Diego, LA, NYC, Philly, and DC.

Here are my thoughts:

Sacramento: there is not really much to do in Sacramento but you are a little over an hour away from SF and Lake Tahoe (if you love skiing/snowboarding/gambling/hiking/camping/scenery)...you can't really beat that.

Chicago: incredible public transportation. You can live without a car in the city. Bars sell alcohol all night long. Great night life. Great food. Great culture and diversity. The people are great. But as I'm looking out my office window, it's snowy and windy with about a -5 degree windchill. It's expensive to own property here, but rental prices are very reasonable. Gas prices are through the roof. Politicians are corrupt. Traffic is horrible (not as bad as LA, though). If it weren't for the weather, this would be the best place to live.

Seattle: a good combination of the Midwest "feel" with West Coast weather during the summers. Great city life. Skiing about an hour away.

If money were no object, I'd move to SD. However, since it is, I would move to Seattle since I can deal with the gloominess and be ok.

I am a landlord that is presently renting out a two bedroom flat/apt. here in SF for $2,100 a month. It is located about 250 yards from a BART station and less than 50 yards from where the prostitutes/drug addicts hang around. I have NO problems renting out that space here in SF because so many people want to live here. I have about six groups of people interested right now. The vacancy rate here in SF is less than one percent.

By the way, yesterday was gorgeous here in the Bay area.
