What can a VP of HR offer in regard to career counseling? Unless you are just starting out, not a whole hell of a lot. Lunch with the CEO is a vastly superior option.

Lunch with CEO. Order the Surf N Turf.

The OP doesn't state the CEO is paying.

Fortune 20 company and it's for charity, I'll bet you a lot of money OP won't be paying.

Since you're an intern I would say do the lunch with the CEO, if he's cool it might be fun, if he isn't it's only about an hour. Even if you offend the guy you go back to school at the end of the internship. Four hours with HR is going to be pure torture any which way you slice it.

I'll bet you a lot of money that an intern has NO chance of winning the lunch with the CEO.

I don't think either the lunch with the CEO or the career counselling would be beneficial, so I'd probably bid on neither.

One, it is for charity so I am not in for the $ or how much I am willing to pay for.

Two, my team is also sponsoring me and they are willing to cover some of the cost as well.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here... my point was that an intern surely cannot afford as much as other employees.

This is an auction, right? Anyway, even with your team members throwing some money in, you'll probably still get beat by a higher level manager who is willing to spend a few grand hoping he'll impress the CEO and get a promotion.

And as I said before, I don't think you'll benefit much from either.

I bet the VP may have at least a passing acquaintance with the recruiters and hiring managers you want to work through and for, while nobody you would normally work with knows the CEO. I'd take the VP any day, because s/he's more likely to follow up with the relevant people.

LOl make sense for those top managers to spend a few grand. But I think they meet the CEO often already. Anyways, I will just try my best to bid for it

The benefits at working at a small company....I sat one table away from the CEO and CFO for lunch!

I would do the HR session....don't really want to meet the CEO of Microsoft ;)

They're CXOs. They don't know a damned thing except the right people that got them into their position.

That's what I'm talking about. If you are wanting to go permanent with this company, I think this is the way to go. Talk about your strengths and then ask about strategies of catching and retaining interest with resumes and applications, etc. Let them know you're smart, even if you have to lie because you're not. Plus, spending 4 hours with someone will leave a greater impression than spending one hour. The VP of HR is involved with employment, whereas the CEO doesn't give a rat's ass about a position that far down the chain.

If you don't want a permanent position with the company, the VP would still be beneficial because you could use the knowledge and apply it elsewhere. Picking the brain of a CEO could be cool, too. Depends on what you want to take from the opportunity. I don't really think that lunch with a CEO is going to get you much as far as being beneficial to your future.
